Cassette removal tool.

Post by The Path Racer »

I've never done a cassette removal but can someone please confirm the specific tool required. It's a Sunrace 7 speed. Will the FR-5 type be suitable? I'm not sure why there appears to be missing tabs but perhaps that's how it was designed?

Am sure that both a cassette removal tool (right) and a freewheel/freehub removal tool (left) will fit this.

And if you're lucky enough to have a bench vice, I've always found that gripping the tool in the vice jaws and rotating the wheel works really well - you get great leverage that way and the rubber of a tyre is a fab material to grasp.

I suspect that you are thinking of freewheel removal, which is different You need use something in the sprockets (eg. a chain whip) when removing a cassette. Sun Race and Shimano use the same size spline here. I am pretty sure that both items depicted upthread are freewheel removers. The one on the right looks a bit like a cassette remover, but the splines are not tall enough.

The Park Tools FR5 will do it used with a chain whip. Park Tools have replaced the FR5 with the FR5.2. Alternatively there are good cheaper equivalents by Cyclo, BBB and others.
