Can I fit on a Dawes Galaxy AL 2017 58cm frame? I'm about 5'9, about 31 inch inside leg?

I agree, the whole transmission is worn out.
(This can be avoided by replacing the chain before it wrecks the rest, but too late now)
I think the chainrings are rivetted steel so it’s a new chainset and matching bottom bracket unit bearing to match the chainset.

Incidentally I don’t think that’s a 58 cm frame, have you measured it?

Nope. I will have a look - it needs a good clean first and I assume it'll be marked on the frame? If not I'll measure it with a tape measure.

I'd suggest something like this: https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m8b0s109p20 ... e-Chainset (£41)
7-speed cassettes can be had for under £15, and chains for under £10 (Tredz)
Thanks - extremely helpful :)

And I don't think a 2017 Galaxy would have had a 7-speed cassette either, originally.

8 by my count; chain is on sprocket 2 in the picture?

FWIW your transmission is so knackered that even the most skillful dremel user would struggle.

BTW whoever said '7s' is evidently blind; I can clearly see 7 sprockets plus the chain is sat on one, making 8 in total.

And I even had my glasses on. And, the 2017 model Galaxy Al did indeed have 8 sprockets.

Thanks Brucey! Based on the earlier comments I plan to replace the complete transmission (if I keep it). I'm also frankly considering just getting rid of it to avoid the hassle of fixing it up given it was dirt cheap, it's slightly large for me, plus it's aluminium and a Dawes Galaxy Aluminium bike frame seems...wrong.

In what way is it too big?
It looks like saddle and bars are about the same height, if reach is too long a shorter stem can fix that.
Chances of finding a bike that fits with no repairs to do is small.

True, and if it was just the transmission I'd fix it but the height issue would remain.

The handlebar reach is OK although I'd prefer it to be a little bit closer & more upright as my arms are fairly straight especially when riding on the brake hoods - as you say, that can be adjusted with a new stem. My leg reach to the pedals is OK but it feels like I've compromised comfort somehow. I took it for a test ride and felt a bit sore (although possibly to do with the slipping chain!).

The main sizing problem and which can't really be resolved is that the crossbar is a little too high for comfort. With feet flat on the floor the wedgie risk is real! :)

How times change! BITD that standover clearance would have been described as 'more than adequate' I expect, so I agree with Colin; you could (and probably should) fix the reach with a different stem. I have come to realise that in the past many people were happy to buy bikes that were 'too big' because they were more comfortable. You need to spend a lot of money on fancy double-butted tubes if you want a 22" steel frame to ride as well as a 24" one made from gas pipe. These days folk are far more likely to fit fat tyres than they are to have a really responsive frame.

Thanks Brucey! I'll give it a go then based on your and 531colin's feedback!
