It's on a Giant MTB from the mid 90's. The rings aren't rivetted.

Are there any stamps on the inside of either crank? If so that'll point you in the right direction for an internet search.

According to the sticker on this one, it appears to be a Suntour SR Powerflo PFF:-

The brand name is SR Suntour, not vice versa.

That looks very like it. I have a feeling the chain rings are riveted. I'll put my glasses on and take another look at mine, I'm wondering if mine is the same.

It does look like the chainring bolts in both chainsets, i.e. the one in the photo I linked to and the one in the OP's photo, use Allen key bolts.

i can safely say I have never knowingly clapped eyes on such a thing before.

Thank goodness, it looks truly horrible.

That was going to be my next question but with Brucey's thumbs down I won't bother. :D

I’d have thought that going down that inexpensive replacement route was a pragmatic choice worthy of pursuit - perhaps less worn examples might also be available. Maybe not an ideal route but it’s going to produce useful improvements at a minimal cost - which is a good step or two in the right direction.

I agree - take the whole chainset off and send the lot to recycling then fit something new or good secondhand. You can pick up very serviceable brand new Shimano Acera for £35 or so or - as per that ebay link above - there'll be loads of triples on ebay, probably in varying states of wear although you might be lucky enough to find some NOS (new old stock) being cleared out.

if the BB bearings are OK then a direct replacement crankset (eg. as per Andrew S's link) would be easiest. Otherwise fit an equally horrible Sun Race unit which should only cost about £20 or so.

Those chainsets often have the rings riveted together with rivet heads simulating an Allen head to make it appear of better quality. :(
