Broken spoke
Re: Broken spoke
Thanks guess I would have to take to a bike shop to repair and ask if they will have a full look over the rest of the bike
Re: Broken spoke
Debating whether it's worth repairing or just writing the bike off.

Re: Broken spoke
At least take it to a shop and get a quote.
What is the bike? Any info on how old it is...? How much did you pay for it?
The challenge with S/H bikes, as mentioned previously, is they can be absolute heaps of junk or they can be real diamonds in the rough. It'd help greatly if you can at least state the make and model of the bike and an approximate age of it.
If you do decide to just bin it, at least take it to a cycle charity for potential future use / refurb, don't just chuck it in a skip. If you say whereabouts you are, people on here might be able to suggest a suitable shop, charity etc to have a look at it or to take it from you.
Re: Broken spoke
seasoned spanner-twirlers would probably not find it difficult or expensive to fix your bike; there are lots of RDs that might work OK here (it is arguably the most common type) plus the cassette and chain are consumables, anyway.

Re: Broken spoke
Why would it need a new shifter? There's no indication of there being anything wrong with the shifter unless there's something else you've not mentioned...?
Noting of course that it's difficult to make any sort of judgement without seeing the bike, I don't think it'll need a new wheel, just a replacement spoke. It certainly won't need a new front wheel as well.
How much did you spend on the bike? I see from the previous thread the seller was asking £200 for it in the original advert, did you pay that much? Cos if you buy new wheels, mech, chain and cassette and shifter (although again, why would it need a new shifter?) that's over £200 by itself, especially if you need a shop to fit it all for you. Spending that sort of money on a 14yr old bike is not really economically sensible.
It goes back to the risks of buying S/H - as Brucey says above, if an experienced and mechanically competent rider was buying that, they'd have done a full check and clean of it which would probably have highlighted the rear mech issue and prevented the incident from happening in the first place.
Your only solution at this stage is to take it to a reputable shop and get them to do a check of it and quote on the rear wheel, the mech and any other issues which they identify.
Re: Broken spoke
May need a new shifter as the mechanism has sort of bent in to the wheel
Re: Broken spoke
I'll take it in this weekend. I was drawn to the bike as it's an XXL frame. Struggled to find many new road bikes in this size
Re: Broken spoke
so what did they say? What are you going to do?

Re: Broken spoke
I think you may be getting confused with the correct name of components. The shifter is the component attached to the handlebars that you operate with your hand to change gear. Shifters like yours are also often referred to as brifters as they combine both brake and gear levers.
The mechanism that is bent on your bike is the rear derailleur (also often referred to as the rear mech). There is usually a component that sits between your rear derailleur and the frame called a gear hanger. This sacrificial component is designed to break if the bike is crashed, thus preventing the more expensive derailleur from being bent. It is much cheaper to replace a gear hanger than a derailleur. I suspect that your bike has either been crashed (and the gear hanger has been replaced without fixing the issue with the derailleur) or it has had some heavy object leaning against the derailleur when the bike was in storage and it has bent it over time.

Re: Broken spoke
Thanks for the in-depth answers. The price for the repair would be £155. Needs a new rear wheel as the spokes are seized. And then the derailleur. It's a 14 year old bike. Cost me £170
Re: Broken spoke
The derailleur says Shimano rd4500 these look easy to fit. If I bought a new/second hand one with the same code?
