Broken spoke

I've had a spoke brake/ come away on my rear tyre. If appears to have bend/misaligned the I think it's called that caliper near the rear cassette. I'll take to a bike shop. Just wondered about the likely repair needed here. Thanks

Sorry to hear about your mech problems .It,s not clear what the problem is apart from a spoke breaking.

typically what happens is that the rear derailleur (aka 'the rear mech') plunges into the wheel (through wear or bad adjustment, or the mech being a bit bent already) and this breaks spokes, usually not the other way round.

yes new spoke needed. These arent common spokes so may have to be ordered in. The rear derailleur is also bent. A smaller local shop may be able to bend it straight but its probable that you need a new derailleur mech too. The upside is you didnt break the gear mech hanger bolted to the frame. Repair cost is likely to exceed £100.
Get an estimate from a couple of smaller cycle repair shops or even a mobile repair man.

Thanks. Nearly the price of what I paid for the bike.

What is the likely cause of this happening?

Misadjustment. The derailleur has two small screws on it. Often they are marked H and L in the plastic surround or similar. They are travel limiters. One controls how far the derailleur will move right in your pictures (i.e. away from the wheel and towards/past the small sprocket). The other, the critical one for this purpose, controls travel past the large sprocket. If it's set wrongly, it will allow the derailleur to move into the wheel.

I think what we are looking at here is a broken spoke with the nipple still attached.

If that is the case the nipple may have pulled through the rim in which case the rim will need to be replaced as well. Can you upload a photo of where the broken spoke would have joined the rim?
