I bought a Garmin Etrex Vista HCX unit from a fellow forum member a few months ago for the princely sum of £16.50. I am generally very pleased with the unit as it does all that I require and takes AA rechargeable batteries.I have managed to upload OSM maps via an SD card and have uploaded routes and tracks via Garmin basecamp; a bit clunky at times but that's probably me, not the software.
The only real annoying thing is that I don't seem to be able to delete the 'waypoint labels' from the display. They are overly conspicuous and tend to obliterate the underlying map. Would anyone have any advice on how to remove these labels.. I've tried the 'setup map' >> 'user waypoints' >> 'off ' .........plus other, what I would deem logical menu options, but to no avail. I can't get rid of them.
Below is a poor image showing said labels (i.e ALDI 1, ALDI 2 .....etc, any advice well appreciated:
I realise the best advice would be to buy a more upto date Garmin unit, but if it ain't broke.........!

Re: Older Garmin Etrex Vista HCX display query
It's for a different model but does this help?
https://forums.garmin.com/apps-software ... map-screen
If not then I suggest asking in the Garmin UK support forum.

Re: Older Garmin Etrex Vista HCX display query
Thanks Jonathan, from that Garmin forum info:
It is done in the waypoint properties window. Double click on a waypoint to open up the window and choose Symbol from the drop down menu on the Display Mode line......................
When double clicking on a waypoint I do not get the same options as detailed above. No worries, I'll try something else and get there in the end hopefully. I sometimes use a Garmin edge 130 and the navigation on that, although just a line on the screen, is a darn sight more straightforward!
cheers anyway.

There are a few possibilities in the manual

Re: Older Garmin Etrex Vista HCX display query
I had a browse through the manual but could find nothing of real significance. Cheers anyway. A workaround would be to call all future routes by a short name i.e ".", which should take up less space on the display!
