Oops - bolt came loose

Post by [XAP]Bob »

Rolhoff torque arm is bolted on with a pair of chainring bolts, and one of them had managed to come loose, the internally threaded section therefore came into contact with the output sprocket (attached to the disc brake mounts) under power and ended up bending one of the fairly sturdy plates which are the attachment point.

Managed to fish it out and replace it, adding loctite and doing it up in german (guten tight).

A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

Looks like that's deep in the bowels of a Velomobile, if under power, could have been troublesome.

It is indeed in the drive train of my Mango.
And it was under power, pulling onto the main road, got about 50 yards before the pedals siezed... I managed to roll to a dropped curb and pull off safely.

Took a while to figure out what had failed, and then to figure out how to bodge it enough to get home (at reduced power)

Indeed - Just the, fairly sturdy, rolhoff plates which have been affected - and they are both easily replaced - though they don't need it here, I just bent it back by doing up the bolt. So there is some residual stress in there now, but not in a direction that concerns me I don't think.

Looking at those pictures - I should probably clean that chain and relubricate it... how it's got that filthy in there I don't know.

Then my bungee tensioner decided it had had enough, fortunately quite close to home.
Fixed that and got myself some new threaded clip nuts, which make bolting the lid on top much easier, only need to deal with one tool, which isn't adjacent to any of the magnets around the hatch.

Hopefully I can tape the lid back on now that I've been through a servicing cycle.

Lid taped on, and I'd almost forgotten how much difference it makes - so quiet over the rubbish road surfaces.
