Complete NOOB with some new bike issues

Post by MrMan »

Hi
Haven't cycled in 35 years and its my first time now. Bought a new bike from Halfords. Carrera Vendetta.
Have a few issues but will start with the most urgent one today.
Bike is just 6 weeks old or so. Only ridden 3 or 4 times.
Noticed today the front tyre was flat.
Pumped it up and heard hissing from the valve.
Touched the valve and it popped out completely!
I have pics

Why has this happened and can it be repaired or do I need to replace the inner tube.
Anyone know what inner tube I need and where to buy?
Tyre size is 27.5 x 2.8" wide.

Thanks

You’ve more than likely got a Schrader valve and it’s unscrewed because it wasn’t tight. It will screw back in with correct tool.

Same as car tyres. Halfords will probably screw it back in if you don't have the right tool. There are car dust caps available with a valve tool in their lids - we're talking about a cost of pence rather than pounds.

Thanks for the replies.
it is not the small valve piece that screws into the body of the valve, but the whole complete thing looks detached with a thin piece of rubber sleeve around the top, almost like it has ripped away from the inner tube?
Managed to add some pics.

You'll need a new tube. I'd take the wheel back to Halfords, as it looks like a faulty tube.

Took me a while to understand what I was looking at, but somehow the inner part of the valve has completely pulled out of the plastic/rubber housing that it should be inside, and which is integral with the tube.

You might be able to repair it using impact adhesive (thin coat on inside of plastic/rubber housing, thin coat on coppery part of valve, leave two minutes to ‘dry’, push valve into housing), but TBH that might either not work at all, or fail in service.

New tube.

It’s a weird failure, and I wonder if the tube is actually quite old, been hanging around in storage or transit, so the thing has decayed, or whether it is the result of a manufacturing fault.

Thanks everyone.
You are probably right in that it may have been sitting in storage for a while.
I have ordered two new inner tubes from ebay as the size I need is not readily available.
I will take the wheels off and take them down to Halfords although driving there and back and haggling to get them fixed will likely cost more than replacing the tube myself. Just need to watch some youtube vids to learn how!

Before I bought a bike I said I do not want a relationship with it and just want minimal hassle and to enjoy riding. Guess that is impossible!

Given that so many of the working parts on a bike like a Carrera Vendetta are exposed, I’m not sure it will ever meet this requirement. That said, you have probably just been unlucky with that valve as there are millions of that design in daily use around the country.

you need to learn how to change an inner tube in case you have a puncture when riding , even if you convert your tyres to "tubeless " like a car tyre there may be a situation where the sealant cannot plug the hole and you need to put an inner tube in anyway .
Its literally a 10 min job from start to finish and a skill you need to know rather than being stuck somewhere without the knowledge of means to fix it .

If you enjoy riding, you'll find you're in a relationship with it, like it or not :D

The tube and levers arrived and pleased to say I changed my first ever tyre today at my age of 45.
Thank you everyone for your input and encouragement.
I thought it would be difficult and long winded but you were right, it didn't take long.

Well done! it is definitely worth learning how to do the the basics, so often the 'stress' of ownership of something comes from the unknown and not knowing how it works or how to fix it. The more familiar you are with the basics of how the bike (car/machine/tool whatever) works and how to solve common issues the less stressful it is in the long term.

A great example of this is people that don't ride their bikes after getting a puncture as they don't have the time to take it to a shop, or the knowledge to fix it themselves, or are too afraid to venture out on a ride in case they do get a puncture or the chain falls off or something.

You're not in this group so give yourself a pat on the back :-)
If you find yourself wanting or needing to know more then this forum and youtube are great resources for info, but also check out if you have a local bike co-op or recycling charity as they will often run basic maintenance courses, sometimes free, sometimes at nominal cost and they are a really good way of learning in a practical environment.

Many happy miles to you!

no kidding! I didn't even know that is how some valves are made. i suspect that this would be an easy and permanent repair, using epoxy resin.

used correctly, it is incredibly useful stuff, and actually the stuff from the pound shop is OK.
