a belt and braces solution might be to use RTV sealant to help stop the water from getting in, plus adding a tiny drain hole, so that if water does get in, it does't stay in.cycle tramp wrote:.. if it rains hard, water gets into these gaps, is funnelled down the stem and then held against the steel steering tube.. a less than ideal situation..

" 1991, that's...um... 33 years ago! If its any consolation, that's not a bad life span for a frame"
Hi cycle tramp, agreed, though I enjoyed taking the moral eco high ground by saying "same bike for over 30 years" (actually only the frame and rack.) And now I can't any more
Still pondering the options regarding repair.

Re: Quill stem to A-head set adapter stuck
It’s good to get to the bottom of things. So, for the first time, I stripped a bike. It was depressing to see how much rust had accumulated in the bottom bracket. And if moving the frame the top tube was (rust)ling like maracas. Removing the fork was difficult as the thread of the steerer was all squished. I’ll keep the frame for sentimental value but for now won’t try to repair.
The dilemma is what now? I’m left with wheels with Alfine and Schmidt hub dynamo respectively, plus lamp. A Deore left hand crank from 1991, and Stronglight spider, both very important to me as they result in a low Q-factor. Then old mudguards, flat pedals and nothing else really. Probably not worth to get frame for.
As for the future, Hub gears or derailleur, chain or belt drive, Thorn touring bike or something more modest? Who knows…
Happy cycling everyone.

On the other hand; search ebay, facebook market place and similar for a 90s steel framed hybrid with suitable wheel size that's been at the back of somebody's garage for most of its life. Strip and rebuild with the parts you already have.

If it was me, I'd take down another frame, from where I had it hanging at the back of the shed and bolt all the pieces to that one (but my shed is where the place where old 26" wheel tourers go to die)...Blackredgold1964 wrote: ↑14 Aug 2024, 9:42pm The dilemma is what now? However as you're not me, the second best thing to do might be to leave a post card with your local recycle a bike charity, let them know your interested in a frame with 700 wheels and mounts for v-brakes and see if they've got anything or are prepared, in tge future to keep an eye out for a suitable frame.....

Hi gaz and cycle tramp,
thumbs up to to both options, ebay and cycle charity, or more precisely, https://www.stpaulscentre.org.uk/cycle-workshop, where I know the people too.
I'm gradually getting used to the idea of cobbling something together.

Re: Quill stem to A-head set adapter stuck
faced with a similar dilemma, I found it easier to repair the frame
