Tyres for a Carerra Subway 1

Post by Rankersbo »

Hi

I have a Carerra Suway One hybrid which I use for commuting: about 11 miles a day on roads and greenways going up to 31 miles on a mixture of canal towpaths, roads and greenways if I am feeling cheap/energetic.

The bike is gradually wearing out, I've just replaced the pedals (with a LOT of help) and am going to have to. The guys who helped me out with removing the pedals noted the state of the rear tyre so I am looking to replace it. I can get the identical tyre on ebay for £23 (KENDA K841A KOMFORT, size 27.5 x 1.95) but wondered if there was anything better value out there I should be considering- either cheaper, similar price but better quality, or of a design more suited to the usage?

I've tended to have to scrap bikes before they get to this stage so have no experience with tyres

I would fit Schwalbe Land Cruisers. Central bead for friction free traction on tarmac and lots of side knobbles for making progress on mud/ off road stuff. Cheap too....

Reuse, recycle, to save the planet.... Auctions, Dump, Charity Shops, Facebook Marketplace, Ebay, Boots. Old House, and a Banger ..... And cycle as often as you can...... Every little helps!

Exactly what I was about to say. :D
Schwalbe tyre quality has taken a bashing on this forum but I have sold and fitted a lot of these tyres and never seen a poor one.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

Here's the link at Fawkes for the 27.5 diameter tyre if that's what's currently fitted on your bike, the one linked above is for the larger 700 wheel.

What do you actually think of the Kenda tyres, maybe you want more grip and comfort and want to go for bigger tyres or perhaps you consider them slow and want faster rolling lighter tyres. I'm a heavier rider so tend to go for bigger tyres with more grip and comfort plus more capacity for taking weight so I like the Schwalbe Super Moto X tyres like these;

You're spoilt for choice, plenty of good tyres in that size, for your use, at your price point. My choice would be the Continental Double Fighter, leans a little more towards the off-road than some of the suggestions, but not a bad tyre on Tarmac. List price is a bit high, but they're usually on offer somewhere,

Is it the Land Cruiser you're recommending or the Land Cruiser Plus as in the link? I haven't used either, but experience with other Schwalbe Plus tyres has shown me they can be very different to the non Plus versions.

I don't see any Land Cruisers on-line in 27.5 size, they all seem to be Land Cruiser Plus now, hopefully better protection from thorn punctures which I found the standard Land Cruisers prone to.

Hello.I bought a pair of Schwalbe land cruiser plus from Halfords for my Carrera Parva. I've had them for three years and there's plenty of tread left. One puncture thanks to me riding through a pile of Hawthorn twigs. I will certainly replace them with the same when they wear out.
