eBike hydraulic brakes supplied with non-standard sized pads and rotors

Post by Manc33 »

I have seen hydraulic brakes that have the 3 pin motor cutoff built in.

"DYISLAND LD4X-300 4 Piston E-Bike Hydraulic Disc Brake"

On those it says they have increased the thickness of the rotor to 2.3mm (when an ordinary rotor is 1.8mm thick).

They have also made the pad surface area larger at 34.7 x 20mm as opposed to 26 x 15mm. Not only that but the pads are 3mm thick as opposed to the usual 1.9mm thick.

Does that mean I'd be stuck having to use those rotors, or can 1.8mm thick rotors still be used?

Since hydraulic brake calipers have no adjustment for the pads, I can't see why they wouldn't work in that respect, but there's a more worrying issue - the pads are 20mm high when normal rotors take pads that are 15mm high, so doesn't that mean a normal rotor will end up eating a groove into the bigger pads over time? That can't be safe, it could end up with the rotor jamming?

It seems like a sneaky way of forcing you to use their rotors.

Oh and the front brake is on the left lever, rear on the right lever. :x

Why not just use the supplied rotors?

Because I don't think my rear brake mount can accommodate a 180mm rotor, it's quite an old carbon frame and I am sure I have been through all that in the past, it's 160mm or nothing, back there. Also, why take off rotors that are nowhere near worn.

You can buy just the levers and use your own callipers and rotors, I've ordered these...

...they should arrive this week.

Thanks but I've realized, there's no need to swap to hydraulics - I only wanted to because the cheap Bafang brake levers I am currently using (with BB7 brakes) are nothing like as good as the old setup with those same calipers and XTR M950 levers.

Then I realised the below gadget exists - it's like a gear shift sensor, but for braking. I can stay on my cable BB7's and use the old XTR levers, without gluing sensors and magnets on. I didn't want to risk messing up M950 levers if I ever peeled the JB Weld off and paint started coming off with it.

I never even knew these gadgets existed for cable brakes. What will they think of next

My main gripe has always been with how cheap and spongy my Bafang brake levers are, compared to those old XTR ones, so if there's a way to use those, I will. It's like going to hydraulics anyway, just the difference between those XTR levers and the Bafang ones.

I don't know how long these things have been around but I can't find any video reviewing it or installing it. :| It's simple enough to install. Maybe everyone is on hydraulics these days?

OK, I thought you already had hydraulic brakes.
Those inline brake sensors do look like a good idea.
