transport allowance

Post by karenmc »

What is the standard allowance for travel by bike for work purposes? My company gives 40 p per mile for a car and 20p per mile for a bike. Is this about average?
I apologise if this has been covered elsewhere- couldn't find it

In that case your company is in line with the tax man. If they gave less then you could claim more from the taxman, if they gave more then you would be taxed on the difference.

I think, but as I've never claimed I'm not certain.

Coop group pay 40p per mile for car drivers
to attend meetings.
I had no car and intended to cycle but they would not give me anything at all.... because " it does not cost you anything!"
If 50 miles takes 4 hours to cycle they should be paying by the hour at about £7 per hour
OR the same rate as cars.

I believe that you could fill in a tax return and claim 20p per mile from the taxman. Although I could be wrong.

Since I paid no tax, none was repayable.
Thank you for the thought

Some of my cycling friends (both chefs at the time) got paid their hourly rate to cycle to another workplace whre their services were required. It was winter so they definitely deserved it!

I don't see why we shouldn't get the same as a car. We could always drive and claim it.
