Brucey's suggestion to fashion a new spring is worth a go. There are lots of places selling piano wire on line. B&Q does it too. This 1.5mm diameter spool of 5.5m should keep you in a lifetime of lever return springs. https://www.diy.com/departments/diall-b ... 262_BQ.prd

If the front brake lever rattles with no spring inside, it usually means there is something wrong with the cable or the caliper.
I think it depends if there is play before actuation of the disc brake actuation arm
that would be 'something wrong with the cable' then.

No - just that the slack could be taken up by the pinch bolt

It might be that there's nothing 'wrong' with either. Some calipers have very little spring tension when the caliper lever arm is fully open (brake fully off). Spyres are a bit like that. You could argue that there's something wrong with the design and a stronger spring should have been specified but the reality is that's how it is from new.
You can mitigate that by having a decent brake lever return spring or by taking up a tiny bit of the initial caliper lever arm movement at the pinch bolt. ....Or ask Brucey to design you a better caliper spring.
