RSV Vaccination?
RSV Vaccination?
I've never heard of this before. With extreme COPD I am presumably "vulnerable" and will be offered the vaccination. I assume in addition to "flu jab".
I'll research re side effects, possible down side with other meds, but anyone else having to decide whether or not to accept yet another routine vaccination?
From BBC News:
"A vaccination programme to protect newborn babies and older people against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is being rolled out in England, Wales and Northern Ireland on Monday, following a similar scheme in Scotland.
RSV is one of the common viruses that causes coughs and colds in winter, but it can cause severe and sometimes life-threatening breathing difficulties.
For the first time, women who are at least 28 weeks' pregnant and elderly people aged 75 to 79 will be offered the vaccine."

Re: RSV Vaccination?
Thank you. From the JCVI Guidance refered I don't have to think about it yet:
"A one-off catch-up campaign for those already aged 75 to 79 years old on 1 September 2024 will be undertaken at the earliest opportunity."

Re: RSV Vaccination?
Is this a one off lifetime immunity or will it need topping up. I had my flu and COVID jabs this time last year. Not heard of a roll out for either. Is it delayed until the new variants become dominant ?

Re: RSV Vaccination?
Interesting as to it not being available to those ages 80 and older. Get vaccinated at eg 76 and you wont get a booster and may no longer have much protection.Jdsk wrote: 2 Sep 2024, 11:46am"Older adults only need 1 dose, which should protect them for several years.":

Can't see anything in the links about reasons for it not being offered to those aged 80 and over. But then NHS can do weird things with age and vaccination eg I can't get a Shingles vaccination on NHS due to my age despite people older and people younger getting it.

Re: RSV Vaccination?
As above: we don't yet know how long immunity will last. If protection is seen to decrease then the policy can be changed.Psamathe wrote: 2 Sep 2024, 11:55am ...

Re: RSV Vaccination?
I wonder whether the "catch up" for those already over 75 will work down from 79 or up from 76!

And do not forget your Shingles jab.I remember vividly someone posted on these threads that it was very very painful.

Had that one!
Had that one!
Re: RSV Vaccination?
I had the Shingles jab last week and although my arm was tender for a few days it was not ‘very, very painful’, as stated earlier. I do have to go back for a second dose in 3 months and yet everyone I know who has had it previously (the vaccine), only had one dose. I was told it was not a ‘live vaccine’, perhaps that makes a difference, oh and I’m not immune depressed, well not as far as I know!
Re: RSV Vaccination?
No 6 months time, not 3 months as I wrote above!

I think that comment was about shingles being ‘very, very painful’, not the immunisation.ElaineB wrote: 7 Sep 2024, 4:16pm I had the Shingles jab last week and although my arm was tender for a few days it was not ‘very, very painful’, as stated earlier. There are two different shingles vaccines used by the NHS in England: one requires two doses, the other doesn't:

Thank you for that Jdsk.
Yes I know a few people who have had Shingles and described it as ‘agony’, hopefully now I won’t experience that!

I had shingles in my early seventies. I thought I was suffering bites from an insect.ElaineB wrote: 7 Sep 2024, 4:24pm Thank you for that Jdsk.

After an online search it seemed I had bed bugs - couldn't find any signs of them - searched again and decided it might be shingles.
Doctor confirmed shingles and gave me medication - "you've had it too long for the medication to be effective but in case it flares up again".
Experiences vary - it can be very nasty - I didn't find it very painful - more irritating.
