The real question that is now perplexing me is why don't people put bar ends on drop handlebars? Or even butterfly handlebars??

We do on the rear bars of the tandems for small stokers, in some cases very small. The bars have usually been inverted.

Modern brifter hoods are practically bar-ends - more extended hand-grip than lever hood

. . . then there's this (not drops or butterfly though):

Is that for riding or is it a trail-side sculpture?

I still love bar ends on by flat bar bikes. My objective is take pressure off of the carpal tunnel nerve. To effectively do this, you need the bar ends mounted pretty vertically. You can then turn you wrists 90 degrees to the side when cruising along. Too horizontal and you can't do that.

Dunno - the picture has been doing the rounds on teh interweb for years now - I suspect it was done for the sake of it, and for the photo-opportunity. I've also wondered if it's a decent photoshop and not real at all.

Ergon bar ends with the short extension, get the correct angle and you don't need cycling mitts on or off road.

ymmv but personally, one of the reasons I like to wear mitts is in case I'm ever on road but off bike.

I have Ergon GP5 ones on my hardtail, used for trails and mixed terrain bikpacking. With them horizontal they allow different hand positions and also can use them for a slightly more aero position in headwinds.
