Front Mudguard Rattling
Front Mudguard Rattling
Has anyone got any tips on stopping a front mudguard from rattling?
It is on a road bike with dedicated mounting points.
It seems to be rattling at the 3pm position or the horizontal section if that makes sense.
Thanks
Jim

Please could you add some photos showing how it is mounted.

Yes.....tap the mudguard and find where it rattles. We can't tell much by looking at a picture.

The obvious things first, check the bolts attached to the mudguard and attached to the fork. If it still rattles take the wheel out and check the attachment to the fork crown. If all tight, check the brackets are still securely riveted to the mudguard. If a rivet has pulled through and you don’t have a riveter I’d put a short both through.

Mudguards have a tendancy to rattle even when everything is done up tight. The chromoplastic ones can 'tick' and buzz anywhere they contact a bracket or stay. I've resorted to dribbling some wax dry lube on those points. It seeps in to the tiny gap and keeps things quiet for a while. If anyone has a better solution I'd be glad to know of it too

Re: Front Mudguard Rattling
The first place I check is the rivets holding the metal stay joiner plate and fork crown bracket to the plastic guard.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.
Re: Front Mudguard Rattling
As you do the above, note that each time you undo a mounting point, the guard should stay in position. Front guards are not very rigid, so even with all the fittings tight there may be enough movement to rattle against something. If there's room, raise them higher off the tyres, look for any rubbing on the inside of the forks. It might also be possible to add a rubber washer/s at crown mounting. It can be infuriating finding the cause, good luck.geocycle wrote: ↑22 Sep 2024, 5:54pm The obvious things first, check the bolts attached to the mudguard and attached to the fork. Is that a plastic safety release on the stays? Is there any free play in that?

They get the wax dry lube treatment too.axel_knutt wrote: ↑22 Sep 2024, 6:20pm Is that a plastic safety release on the stays? Is there any free play in that?
Re: Front Mudguard Rattling
Something I discovered by accident. A kink in the stays stopped a small rattle.

Lubrication doesn't eliminate free play.Cyclothesist wrote: ↑22 Sep 2024, 6:31pmThey get the wax dry lube treatment too.axel_knutt wrote: ↑22 Sep 2024, 6:20pm Is that a plastic safety release on the stays? Is there any free play in that?

How about "rattling quietly" ?axel_knutt wrote: ↑23 Sep 2024, 12:22pmLubrication doesn't eliminate free play.Cyclothesist wrote: ↑22 Sep 2024, 6:31pmThey get the wax dry lube treatment too.axel_knutt wrote: ↑22 Sep 2024, 6:20pm Is that a plastic safety release on the stays? Re: Front Mudguard Rattling
It does stifle the rattle without impeding the emergency release mechanism. If there's a better solution please share it.
