List of manufacturers of bottle dynamos, with handedness info
List of manufacturers of bottle dynamos, with handedness info
I thought a list of quality remaining manufacturers of bottle dynamos might be useful given they seem to be declining; with info on if a right hand variant, reviews etc:
To start off
1) AXA(formerly Basta) still sell the Traction HR, (with bronze bearings) its expensive rubber roller bands), the duo (plastic body and bearings), the 8201 (metal body and steel bearings*). The Trio has been dropped (presumably Basta though a plastic body and steel bearings made less marketing sense than the metal for both 8201). All stainless shafts. All available in left or right mounting.
8201 good but perhaps not on folders where vibration may loosen rivets.. EDIT I suspect the duo is an IQ in a new case, and my IQ lasted a long time on my folder.
*why only use Bronze (plain?) bearings on the Traction...is steel that much cheaper?
2) I found a Fischer Dynamo with Surge Protection Black on Amazon at £6.37 for RH. I wonder if its quality is acceptable?
Also available as LH as 'Fischer Left Dynamo 6 V 3 Watt Surge Protector 85414' at £5.64.
3) XLC CL-D09, plastic bodied, in both mountings.
Others could add what they know, thanks.
EDIT Marwi corrected to XLC.

Re: List of manufacturers of bottle dynamos, with handedness info
I hope that something useful comes out of this thread and that it doesn’t get derailed.
With my stash of spares, and so many second had ones being (cheaply) available on eBay, I can’t see me buying a new bottle dynamo again.

Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

I've got a stash too. However the improvements with led lighting and battery power density have rendered bottle dynamos to the antique curiosity department.
I now will never need to source a replacement roller again. Cast my own from milk bottle tops in the oven. Choice of colours too.

Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X2, Raleigh 20 stowaway X2, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840, Giant Bowery, Apollo transition.

SJS Cycles have AXA and An Lun, both in either handedness:

That isn't much choice, compared to what used to be available.

True, and just because a dynamo is available in the shops now doesn’t me that the same unit is still manufactured. On the plus side there’s currently a good second hand supply and these things seem to last a very long time. Mine rarely sees use but - as is a feature of the design - it just sits there waiting to be used (so no wear), and when called upon it’s never failed me …. but I maybe drift off of topic.

that is what I used to think too, before I invented a gizmo that will turn almost any bottle dynamo into something that will comfortably outstrip most hub generators in terms of drag.

When will we see this idea?

NB I am very interested in any reports/reviews of the Fischer dynamo, as both cheap and easily available (dynamos are always going to be mail order for me)

I saw a bloke on a YouTube video the other day using a "PedalCell" bottle (less bottle and more "canister" but the same principle) dynamo:
