Halo Supadrive Drive Ring Removal Tool

Post by smuggers »

Maybe a longshot but I am running out of fixes for my son's Halo Supadrive hub. These are noisy hubs but I have a terrible intermittent grinding type of noise. I have taken it apart many times & still have this intermittent noise. Had to purchase a new wrap spring as it had become weakened & you could only buy the spring with the pawls.

My son purchased the Surly Straggler from a bike shop in Manchester just before we came out of lockdown & it's done hardly any miles, perhaps a couple of hundred miles. Local Halo stockist do not have the drive ring removal tool in their workshops & I have sent Halo a video of the noise & had pretty rubbish support if truth be told.

Anybody else had intermittent grinding type noises from Halo Supadrive hubs before.

Looked at buying the tool for drive ring removal & talking £45, so thought I would see if anyone's got one lying around that they no longer require?

Regards

just a quick note. i have had the same issue on the wifes bike for 3 years.
a ex halo dealer says it is a known issues. and it is due to there being only 3 bearings in the hub. and it is something you cant fix.
it is very annoying though.
enjoy it, it only last a short while

Finally found somebody with the same issue.. I have attempted to rectify many times but to no avail.. It's sent me mad & first thing in the morning I am removing the spokes & rim from that rubbish hub.

I have a XT hub on my tourer that's done thousands of miles fully loaded & still going strong after 10+ years.. It's annoying that Halo are still selling these hubs. Buying a new freehub was my next option after trying a new drive ring, so you have saved me nearly £100...Ty!!

The hub spacing on the Straggler is 135mm yes ton? I kind of know it is, just needing reassurance.

I have a set of Halo Evaura wheels which use the Supadrive free-hub and have experienced problems of this nature ever since I started riding them.

To be fair to Halo they sent me a spare set of pawls and a spring after I asked them for help which, once fitted, solved the issue for a while. I believed the problems were originally down to a kink in the spring.

However some of those problems have since returned and I often hear strange and inconsistent noises from the hub while riding. Even after replacing the original free-hub with a new one I continue to have problems.

In addition to the strange noises I also find that the free-hub catches almost every time I start freewheeling or back-pedalling (effectively when I disengage after engaging the hub). Apart from being annoying this can cause the chain to move up on the cassette which leads to an alarming clunk (caused by the chain slotting back into gear) when you move off and re-engage the hub.

I thought maybe I'd got unlucky and it was just me but if it's a common issue it could just be a weakness in the design of the hub.
