Pulled over by the police

Post by [XAP]Bob »

Finally happened...

Got pulled over yesterday - the officers were friendly, but interested in what type of vehicle it was.
They were quite happy when I explained it was a pedal cycle, and quite impressed on a personal level.

Completely good interaction, they even managed to pick a spot where it was fairly easy to pull over safely :)
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

I'm glad that it went well.

Perhaps a photo... ?

Always had a notion the police might pull me over regards riding my recumbent trike, it's not happed yet, and I guess if they did it would be out of curiosity as to astonishing is that!
Just goes to show police are human too.
A laid back, low down, layabout recumbent triker!

What’s so unusual about your bike, that they pulled you over?

He was laying back while cycling. That is enough to raise interest. That and people telling your upright riding partner that it is good those people can get out like that. Those people being disabled (physically and mentally it seems judging by how the general public used to speak to my partner when I was laidback cycling).

I was in my velomobile, so pretty unusual and with hidden mechanicals.

Got pulled over by a Panda Car back in the days when rear led lights were new and most riders relied on Never Ready's. I expected to get a reprimand for a flashing red light. The officer was very interested in the light saying what a good idea they were and asked where could he get one.

The only time I ever got stopped was when I was climbing over the Mendips on the way to Bristol. I saw him walking across the road towards me with a bit of paper in his hand and wondered if I was going to get a lecture about the hazards of cycling on a main road, but he just thought I might like the photo he'd taken of me with the speed camera.

Happened to be watching police interceptors or something similar a couple of nights ago ( it was on while I was cooking dinner -- not the sort of program I'd normally watch )

The police were after a gang of chaps in a car at night -- the gang managed to get a bit of a gap on the police car -- the police came around a corner of an alleyway only to see an abandoned car all 4 doors wide open but nobody in sight. Drones deployed officers running in all directions they spot a young fella in a Hoody walking very casually down one of the side streets.

After a briefing from the police telling him he was a suspect and was to go with them -- they also mentioned " if you're innocent you'll have a funky story to tell your friends " the young fella gets swung against a garden wall ( not forcefully -- he was cooperating with the cops ) and cuffed. This is where my ears pricked up -- he asked the police if he could have a selfie with them arresting him.

I didn't watch the rest of the show but if he was one of the gang he was the coolest I've seen in a long time.

Have you seen the US clip where several youths leap from a car and scatter - the police chase them and then ten seconds later another youth climbs out and legs it back past the police car, away from the pursuing officers...

We were stopped by two very friendly police officers in Cowes, riding slowly through what turned out to be somewhere cycles aren’t allowed but delivery vans are.

Extremely pleasant discussion, with us walking the last 50 metres.
Two wheels preferred.

The only time I have been stopped by the police was many years ago when I was a student. I was cycling back from the students' union after quite a few pints.
They stopped me about 20 metres from where I was living to tell me my rear light wasn't working. I apologised and said "thank you, I'll walk from here, I live over there". I was anxious to get away before they realised that if there was a legal limit for blood alcohol while cycling I would have been way over it.

Were you going fast? A guy who worked in a local bike shop used to commute every day along a busy A road and reported seeing a police car most days, he was very surprised to never have been asked to demonstrate all was legal, since he'd often be travelling at 40mph+.

Walking in Colchester one evening, a minibus full of police started peering out of the window at me then stopped me. When I asked, they said there'd been a serious assault, and I fitted the description. "That'll be the screaming I heard" I thought. After they'd checked in the boot of the car, they went away, and I never heard any more about it.
