I am reminded of a car-camper who sat outside her canvas cottage and watched as my wife and I struck camp and everything went into the panniers. She then asked my wife "But where do you put your shoes?"
We were camping with our (small) motorhome a couple of years ago, at Bedale, and a chap touring on a nice Shand rolled in. I enquired about his route, but he wasn't very talkative so not much was said. My impression was that folk touring on bicycles or hiking are just part of the mix at smaller sites, and not an oddity. My only concern if I were in a tent, especially a small one, would be that I manage to pitch it out of the way of vehicles.

A lovely site with excellent showers, indoor eating area, etc and very friendly folk running it. Five minute stroll to the town centre shops and pubs.

Looks nice! Just in case anyone gets confused, it's not a Camping and Caravanning Club site, despite the name... :)

Blimey. Think I'll stay wherever the Judean Peoples Front are staying. Or do I mean the PFJ ...

Yet the sign says it is a C&CC 5 van certificated site.
Are they lying?

I’ve cycled past it a couple of times in recent years. It is used for club rallies too so can be busy.

There are different types of C&CC site. This is not owned by the club, but has an arrangement with them. So (at least, when we used it a couple of years ago) it appeared in their handbook. Bedale appears to be a certificated site : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFNErnqiexM

No, but we have had meets at both Hayfield and Delamere.
The next meets are Canterbury (14 Feb), Barnard Castle (7 March) and Alton, The Star (28 March).
Let me know if you need any further information.

Just to let you know how cheap our weekend meets are, here are the prices for our next three Association of Lightweight Campers (ALC) camping meets.
Prices shown are a TOTAL for TWO nights camping! All three sites are Camping and Caravan Club sites with full facilities.
You would need to be a Camping and Caravan Club member though. The additional fee of £6 per year for joining the ALC section can be sorted out later if you want to try a weekend first.
It's great fun, lots of good conversation (if you wish) and various informal events such as cycle rides, going to the theatre or seeing a tribute band, all very laid back and relaxed!
If you are interested please contact me through the message system here or via our website:

By the way, just to mention that we are volunteers running this, it's not a business! :D

Sorry! Yes, I could have been clearer. As PWA has said, there are different C&CC sites, the Club sites, which are pretty standard in having good facilities and have the backerpacker/cyclist rates, and the Certificated sites, which are private and very varied in price and facilities.

So glad I stumbled upon this thread - I had no idea they offered cheap backpacker/cyclist rates.

In fact, I've always (unfairly, I now realise) avoided these Club sites, as going by website info I imagined I would be charged an arm and a leg, plus extra for not being a member.

I feel like a lot more small independent campsites are caravan/motorhome only in recent years (I guess this means they can get away with fewer facilities), so having some more options is excellent news. Huge thanks!

That might be the case, or it might be down to social factors such as behaviours. The entry costs to tent camping are low; those with the funds to support caravan and motor home camping tend not to bother other campers? Just a guess.
Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

One thing I have noticed with club sites (as a motorhome user) is that they tend to be quiet at night. Club members seem to be people who either like the quiet or respect the need of others for quiet.

Yes, I'm sure we've all experienced anti-social behaviour at campsites, which must be a nightmare to deal with for a campsite owner. As well as the socioeconomic factors, I'm guessing its easier for a large group to camp together in tents, whereas caravans/motorhomes tend to be couples or small families. As a family of 6, we've almost always camped on our family holidays for practical reasons.

I would think the arrivals without a car would TEND to be less trouble than those arriving with a car+tents.
(as we're making sweeping generalisations!)

Especially if they're so knackered they fall asleep at 9pm!
