Southwark - how to get some of the annoying cycle barriers removed?

Post by jimster99 »

There are a load of REALLY annoying cycle barriers in Southwark; for instance, at some of the entrances to Southwark Park (especially the Gomm Road entrance...agh!) and at the southern side of Paterson Park. The kind that my bicycle child trailer (with 2 kids) gets completely jammed in. I also see electric wheelchairs getting stuck in these barriers from time to time. Meanwhile, the yobs on mopeds / electric bikes can get through them without too much difficulty (and they are the reason they were installed in the first place!)

Any advice on the best way to get them removed? I'm guessing that the disability access point has more weight than family access. I have no standing in regards to disability and as one person I won't have much weight. Is there a local action group that could do something? Or a local disabled person with an electric wheelchair who'd want to do a grand tour so I can photograph them getting temporarily stuck in the various barriers which I suspect would persuade Southwark Council to invest the funds in getting the worst ones removed?

I think you have the answer. Look for a local access group. Try bike shops, clubs and the council.
