Where is this (Yorkshire?)
Where is this (Yorkshire?)
I was recently watching an episode from series 4 (1988) of the original adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small. The closing credits are over this lovely picture. It looks a wonderful road for cycling: does anyone know where it is? Presumably somewhere in the Yorkshire dales. Thanks for any suggestions!
Re: Where is this (Yorkshire?)
I don't know for sure, but a lot of the road scenes were filmed in the Coverdale area, so you might try and find it there, on Streetview. If it is there, there is a lovely little hill called Park Rash to get to it!
Also. Arkengarthdale and tributary lanes.

All the little back roads round there are great for cycling.

The view is indeed in Yorkshire, from the road heading mainly NE from Askrigg to Swaledale (grid reference SD 9646 9472 looking NNE).

Re: Where is this (Yorkshire?)
Welcome and well done.
I thought, by the view, it was that road and I’d dropped onto it a little lower down when I’d looked.
In my mountain bike days we always went by Summer Lodge and Crackpot.
A bit of useless information
In the 1975 film ACGAS the keeper, from the estate I worked on then, was an extra in the 'show' scene filmed near Grinton.

There's a B&B in Grassington (which is "Darrowby" in the series) which lists the main locations and even offer e-bike tours.

It's all a fair bit south of that stretch of road which doesn't appear on many cycling routes in the area because most seem to go for the much more famous Buttertubs Pass a few miles west!

I assume this refers to the recent series? I never got past episode one it didnt feel quite right.rareposter wrote: 13 Jan 2025, 10:17am There's a B&B in Grassington (which is "Darrowby" in the series) which lists the main locations and even offer e-bike tours.
Alf White lived, in the seventies, at Sutton under Whitestonecliffe next door a friend of mine.
The original series would used the Red Lion at Langthwaite (above Reeth), We occasionally drank in there but kept away when the film crews were about.

Re: Where is this (Yorkshire?)

When the OP first posted, I tried for a long time to get his image to fit with Paul's answer, the road from Askrigg over the top into Reeth, and I just couldn't get it to fit. But its absolutely right; and to prove it my photo taken in 2018 when I was fit enough to get ahead of the group uphill, scramble up the bank and take a picture.....those days long gone, sadly.
The blue sign reads "unsuitable for motors" or to that effect; its the top of the track that leads to Summer Lodge and Crackpot. The sign was still there when the Google Streetview car recorded the images linked!

A different day, on the track, with Summer Lodge below us.....my Flickr stuff is public access, just click on.

Some lovely shots in there Colin!

Re: Where is this (Yorkshire?)
Nice pictures Colin. I really like that road but the hill out of Askrigg is a pull! The Eli in Askrigg used to be good as well. Thoughts of summer rides…..

Re: Where is this (Yorkshire?)
If I’ve got this right I’ve only ever ridden this road once - was it signposted ‘Harkerside’ from Grinton? - on a clockwise loop from Askrigg via Tan Hill. Miserable weather, but a wonderful route if the OP is looking to do a ride along that road.
The only other time I reckon I’ve done - part of - the road was on a ride that took me through Crackpot via a way signposted ‘Summer Lodge only’. I’d recommend the longer route that drops in to Reeth after Tan Hill unless you break out the uphill gravel bike. I had to push!

Colin could make a book with his pics.
