Cyclocross Nationals TV coverage

Post by Paulatic »

The only cover of Cyclocross Nationals I could find yesterday was this teenager on YouTube. She puts British Cycling to shame who gave no coverage at all.
Shows that coverage doesn’t need to be slick and well presented. This Kirstie coverage reflects very much the experience of actually being there.
I’m going to give the girl a plug to thank her for her effort.

I will reserve comment on this until I've watched it! But I'll comment on the widespread ... "negativity" about the lack of officlal coverage. Two things mainly:
- If BC put something together, we'd all want something equivalent to BBC/Eurosport coverage. It would need to be soooooooo much better than something one amateur produced, else they would receive endless brickbats - a hiding to nothing.
- (You may have seen this post on Facebook,: ) a Nat's organiser from a few years back said they'd been quoted £100k for TV coverage. That's a huge amount of money that has to come from somewhere. british (small b) cycling is not a money tree.

I agree we would expect something better from BC. Personally I don’t expect a slick tv programme though. I only visit Fb on an absolute need basis so have not seen any comments on there.
100K though can’t be serious can it? I have no experience of these things but surely 4 guys with cameras in strategic places linked to the on course commentary, someone selecting cameras and a connection to YouTube can’t be much more than a couple of grand for the day.
I say cameras but I think at some point Kirstie coverage was purely by a phone.

Depends on who they asked. I could see the costs adding up to £100k for a high quality production.

It may be a 1 hour race, but that's probably 4 days of production equipment lease and staff costs - delivery, set up, event, tear down. Plus paying for power and connectivity in to a field that may not have it.
A novice learning...

This year 2026…
BC, on YouTube, are giving coverage of the Nationals a try for a one month subscription of £2.99. Going to take a lot of subs to reach the £100k quoted here last year. Will be interesting to so what sort of job they make of it.
I’ve managed to watch all the televised Cross this year finding feeds on YouTube as I wasn’t going to be robbed by Discovery + . However for £2.99 I’ll gladly donate.

Watched it all. It was pretty good apart from a technical problem at the start of the Open Elite race, which meant we only had views from one camera but quickly sorted out. I’ve also seen feeds for the Belgian and Dutch champs on YouTube.

A lot wetter here than South Shields a perfect day to watch Cross all day. BC coverage was fine I hope they see it as a success. We had three feeds going at one point with GB, Dutch, Belgium, Spain, Poland and Italy all easily available.

Milo Wills seemed a little upset I didn’t like to tell him you can’t leave your bike there son.

Watched Dutch and Belgian races yesterday, all good even if the Dutch ladies was a bit of a procession after a couple of laps. The last lap of the Belgian men's was a real humdinger!

Cam Mason was in action at one of the Scottish races in September last year just warming up for the start of the season in Belgium. He really was a class apart from everyone else there (and in that 'Cross culture way was a great sport taking time for selfies and chatting with the kids).
