Which e-bike for me?

Post by danfoto »

After switching to ebikes in 2011, my current bike is a 2023-model Gazelle Grenoble C5HMB, which is coming up to 3000 miles of daily use in all weathers unless there's ice about. I'm considering a replacement, which may well be my last as I'm 78 and I have emphysema.

After more than 2 hours on the internets my head's going round because my requirements are specific:

Step-through frame
Mid motor of at least 75Nm
Belt drive
Disc brakes
Front suspension
7 or 8-speed hub gears
Decent mudguards and lights
Ditto rear carrier

Suggestions please as to what bikes will give me all those features :)

I was going to ask "what's your budget?" but it's such a limited range of bikes that fit those requirements, I think your budget is just going to have to be "whatever it costs to have those features...."

How about that? The only thing it doesn't have is 7 or 8-sp hub gears cos it's got an Enviolo which is a stepless gear - there's no individual clicks, it's simply on a sliding scale. Nice hubs on an e-bike, pretty much maintenance free.

A similar bike is available without front suspension.

Cube are usually worth a look too, this one sort of fits the bill except it's a chain drive (albeit the chain is nearly fully enclosed). Same Enviolo stepless hub gear as on the first Canyon I linked to.

Both Canyon links freeze at a cookies message and the Cube freezes when trying to find a local stockist.

Internet is great when it works :(

The model you have seems to hit all the things you're looking for, so the obvious question here is why do you want to replace the Gazelle?
What is it about that particular model that you're not keen on to the point of replacing it?

It's simply the combination of 75Nm, a 5-speed hub and the hills around here. Plus right now I have a problem with the gears. But your comments have hit the nail on the head. I couldn't find anything at all that ticks all the boxes like the present bike does, so I'm coming round to thinking that I just get the hub sorted out and accept the fact that I go up the hills slower.

Thanks for your input.

Did my hyperlinks work for you?

Goes through fine on all my devices - the work laptop brings up the cookies tab but that can be rejected and closed.

TBH I didn't bother with them because as stated I need belt drive, front suspension and 7 or 8 speed gears. I've tried hard to like the Enviolo but it's not for me.

Another Gazelle seems the most likely, maybe Avignon C380 HMB. https://www.gazellebikes.com/en-gb/ebik ... n-c380-hmb
Gazelle seem to concentrate on 'sensible' bikes.

It's a shame they can't have a sensible web site; theirs is terrible. It makes it really awkward to search and once you've found a bike it needs lots of clicks to check all the details about it.

If you live anywhere near Bristol and are willing to consider second hand look at the very helpful electricbikesbristol
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?item= ... kesbristol
Your requirements are pretty tight so I doubt they'll have anything to suit, but worth a look.

Ah, I'd not noticed it was a 5 speed, I didn't realise Shimano made a 5 speed hub to be honest.

There is an 8 speed version of the Grenoble, e.g. https://www.edinburghbicycle.com/gazell ... ctric-bike
Another alternative to a whole new bike is you could get a new rear wheel built around an 8 Speed hub and sub it in for the 5. If you do that then the Alfine 8 is a more refined version of the Nexus 8 with better bearings and arguably a better buy. There's also an Alfine 11 with more or less the same form factor and more gear range.

Yes, they do. I've been well pleased with every aspect of my Grenoble, and were I in a better state that was unlikely to get worse, I'd continue to be well pleased. The one I had before was a Batavus, and I'd have bought another one, except come Brexit they dropped all sales to the UK.

Alas that 8-speed version is only 50Nm.

Yep, I'm going to look into the likely cost of getting the rear wheel rebuilt with a 7 or 8-speed hub, but I suspect it might get complicated what with needling a new gear shift and possibly a different cable. The latter would be a challenge as it runs through the frame ...

If you can't easily change the gears on your current bike, Kalkhoff seem to have several belt drive ones.
https://www.kalkhoff-bikes.com/en_gb/ad ... belt-drive

None quite meets everything you ask for; several have the Enviolo, the IMAGE 3 EXCITE only has 5 gears, and the IMAGE L ADVANCE is down to a 55Nm motor. Maybe the Nexus/Alfine hubs with more gears aren't specified to be used with higher torque motors?

Or nearly £7000: https://torqueelectric.co.uk/products/r ... rrency=GBP

One massive advantage of the Enviolo is that it is more than capable of handling the extra torque; indeed it gets specced on e-cargo bikes precisely for that reason.

Try harder! ;-)
No, I get it, they're a bit of a Marmite component. But on e-bikes, especially utility / city e-bikes, they're amazing.

Well I'm glad you like them I tried very hard indeed to like a Gazelle e-bike with an Enviolo hub after having been persuaded to spend around £3K on one, but eventually I gave up. I lost £1100 on that bike, which I could ill afford, and it took ages to sell. At least 4 of the potential buyers lost interest after trying it because of the gears ...

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm almost certain the way forward for me is to get the Nexus 5 swapped for an Alfine 8, so I'm now investigating costs of doing just that :)
