“Club” / Branch Jersey recommendations please

Post by Tinkerbell »

Having just done the recent Dieppe Raid and spotted a wide variety of CTC “club” jerseys, a few of our members are asking if our branch could have a dedicated jersey (as opposed to the Cycling UK jersey).

I know there are all sorts of questions / issues such as designs, CTC vs Cycling UK, official branding, etc to consider, but firstly, has anyone commissioned a club jersey and who through?

Secondly how did the process go? Would you recommend / avoid any particular supplier?

Thanks :-)

Chester & North Wales CTC got theirs through Impsport (watch out on sizing as they do different ranges from more "relaxed" to racing I've got L for a short-sleeved jersey & jacket which are a loose fit (I could have probably got away with M). Whereas the later gilet I have is a 2XL & fairly snug (the order was, probably accidentally, produced in a more racing fit)

Chester Fabulous Ladies used Kalas, I think, for theirs. I don't have one to check, even though I'm an honorary member as I pilot tandem for a sight impaired friend in Chester. Kalas are Cycling UK's new official kit partner so there may be special deals if you are a member group.

Chester CTC used Castelli. Nice jerseys but Italian sizing (aka small!)

My local, mainly racing, club - Horwich CC - use Lusso in Manchester for their kit.

I can find out more info on any of the above if you want.

Impsport used to be the go to for many groups, but then we didn't have forums or the internet. Impsport are still probably a good balance between quality and value. We used them in the past but their minimum order requirements changed and our group just wasn't ordering the quantity to make it viable. On the recommendation of another CTC group, we changed to Gear, I think we've had two orders from them, but none in the last few years. UK company, manufacturing in Pakistan, we asked about eco and ethical policies and they're members of Sedex, you can make your own mind up about that. They are very easy to deal with, they'll apply the volume discount even to mixed orders, they can send out samples for sizing, quality is reasonable, without being exceptional, maybe a touch lower than Impsport, but their sizing is more consistent. We had a previous design and they matched it perfectly. Lead times were reasonable and accurate. I think our last order was about 40 garments, over about six lines, no one had any complaints that I know of. Only criticism I have it their logo is more prominent than I'd like, the same criticism applies to some other manufacturers, they will leave it off for a fee.

If you want top quality and British made, there's Godfrey in Nottingham, we considered them, but the price difference was too much for some.

Many thanks for the suggestions.

We’ve gone with Gear Club who seem to be reasonably priced and flexible

That was a quick decision! I think our group took about six months to decide.

We looked at a few, and have to agree that fully UK kit would be better if the members would accept the cost, but it came down to a toss-up between Scimitar and Gear Club. Product quality and price were similar, but Gear Club were simply more flexible in terms of run sizes (particularly going forward).

Our branch is only about 70 strong, and half won’t be interested, so this was all the right balance for testing the waters.
