New Tyres Please

Post by ymfb »

I need new tyres, ive been running Panaracer gravel king 700 x 38C (40-622) TLC with DT Swiss G1800 wheels. They have punctured several times and have a number of pro racer plugs, but I have also be reducing my pressure to 40 psi and haven’t punctured since running the lower pressure.

Somebody I bumped into was extolling the virtues of Strada Bianchi, but they are very expensive. I don’t mind paying but I’d hate to buy expensive tyres that prove to be another mistake.

I mainly ride on asphalt with some light tracks, nothing gnarly. Anyone offer some real world advice.

I should add a friend used these Panaracers for his LEJOG and didn’t puncture once. I’m currently trying to get myself and my bike as prepared as I can for my attempt next May/June.

We use Schwalbe Marathon Plus on our tourers both for touring and around town, mostly because of the puncture resistance. Mine at 100 psi and my wife's at 90 psi.

I read and value the advice from experts in this parish on these and it's one of the few topics on which I come to different conclusions. On our bikes we get an acceptably comfortable ride and don't experience the deadness that others describe.

And that's what we'll use on the end to end when we eventually have time to do it... unless someone convinces me otherwise. And low cost isn't a high priority in our option appraisal.

I was running gravel kings on a bike a couple of years ago ( i ride with tubes and higher pressure than you have stated) and seemed to get an uncharacteristically high number of punctures. I lost faith in the tyres and swapped them out, I'm now running "Continental Contact Speed Reflex" on that bike and don't think I've had a puncture since on that bike. Tyres from the continental contact "family" of tyres have become my preferred option on my bikes, as they seem to be a good balance of rolling resistance to puncture resistance in my personal experience.

Is this with tubes, of tubeless?

If with tubes, I’m a huge fan of Continental contact Plus for the combination of puncture resistance and ride quality, despite their weight, for the duty that you describe.

For tubeless covering the same and some slightly more bumpy stuff in dry weather, I ‘m now trying some Bontrager Girona, and now I’ve found the right pressure for me, they seem very good, but it’s early days, so I’ll not strongly recommend at this stage.

Another 'plug' for Schwalbe Marathon Plus - never , ever, let us down, over many long distance tours.

Happy Days.

Why the very high pressures? Are the tyres very narrow or you + bikes very heavy? If those pressures are a lot higher than the current recommendations to found in various manufacturer and pundit tables giving ideal pressures (as you seem to intimate) what perceived or discovered advantages of higher pressures make you differ?

Someone caught my irony!

Seriously though, we have been using Marathon Plus tyres for what seems like ever, and although we do change the tubes regularly have never had a puncture - even after our fairly vast mileages.

I've been imprssed with the Continental Grand Prix Urbans I picked up for £70 the pair of Amazon. Only 35c mind you.

For info I use TPU inner tubes.
Clever enough to know I'm not clever enough.

+1 for contact plus- I have just put a second set on.

Wore the old ones out, lots of gravel and not great cycle paths on tour- US, UK, France, Switzerland, Italy etc (I have a hybrid bike and use it for bumbling around everywhere) , never had a puncture yet with these tyres. Clearly I’m setting myself up for a whole set of punctures with that comment!

People choose their own criteria, but compromising comfort and speed by choosing a Plus tyre to avoid the average one puncture every 3,000 miles is completely alien to me. For me that's a average of a ten minute delay every 250 hours of riding.
I don't have a tubeless tyre to recommend, I haven't used any, but the Schwalbe G-one are very popular and I'm assuming there's good reason for that.

Thanks, I’m running Tubeless.

I’m going to look at the Bontrager Girona.
