Transition towns.
I'm jumping into this a bit late in the day, and without checking out transition towns, although I have heard of them. The basic idea is make our towns nicer for people on foot or pedal now on the basis that the oil will run out / get very pricy, so lets stop wasting it in traffic jams and get ahead of the game- is that about it?
My suggestion is : all pedestrian crossings to switch to green man in 10 seconds or less from the button being pressed.
Article in Guardian the other day about research in Bristol supporting conclusions of research elsewhere that streets with less traffic are more sociable places ie nicer for people. I think I could have told you that without doing the research, but if the research means that governments and lcoal authorities might do something, then I'm all for it. I think your going to tell me I'm a bit naive.
