Best Ebike forTouring Musician with Trailer
I'm a singer-songwriter from Norfolk, and am planning a UK tour (possibly continuing to Scandinavia) during summer 2026, using an Ebike and teardrop trailer that I can sleep in and also use as an outdoor stage. I'd be really grateful for recommendations for an Ebike that would be up to the task...I plan to travel around 30 to 40 miles per day, and will be in areas such as northern Scotland with steep hills, so will need to have a very reliable battery and motor. Budget is around £2k, I'm currently looking at Cargo Ebikes such as the Fiido Titan Robust Cargo Electric Bike. Thanks!

Welcome. Sounds (!) fascinating.
What’s your estimate of the loaded mass of the trailer?
And is there a way to try the combination before committing the money?

There's thread about that Fiido bike already.cyclingmusician wrote: 2 Aug 2025, 10:47am I'm a singer-songwriter from Norfolk, and am planning a UK tour (possibly continuing to Scandinavia) during summer 2026, using an Ebike and teardrop trailer that I can sleep in and also use as an outdoor stage. It looks like it may be illegal on British roads; and it would be hard to fix if it broke a component.
A robust touring e-bike, pulling what sounds like it might be a hefty trailer, is likely going to cost you more than £2000, depending on what you class as "robust". You could probably buy a tough steel tourer second hand for not much and fit a motor & parts for less than £2000 in total, though.
Given your plan for using such a bike, that might be a good option anyway. If the motor or battery goes phut you can easily buy & fit replacement parts. Ditto bike components. More integrated e-bikes can be difficult to fix, both in terms of the part availability/costs and the skills/tools needed to fit them. On the other hand, a well-made e-bike for touring (the German variety are a good example, often made for trailer-pulling) may be much less likely to go phut or to break a component.
An e-cargo bike. Again, good ones aren't cheap. Also, they're perhaps not as versatile as "just a bike" when you want to nip off somewhere without your trailer and luggage.

Hi Jonathan, thanks for your reply. I haven't worked out the trailer load yet, but estimate around 50 kg. Good idea about trying before buying, I'll certainly contact some local bike shops to see if this is possible.

Thanks for the link to the Fiido thread, some really useful points made there. Which German e-bikes for touring would you recommend?
Re: Best Ebike forTouring Musician with Trailer
I've owned a German designed Cube "Touring One" model for over a year now and can thoroughly recommend its quality and consider it to be reasonably priced. This dealer is also to be praised.

I've never used it for touring however, but do ride it daily and load it up often and occasionally tow a Carry Freedom large Y Frame trailer. I've also attached an Old Man Mountain front rack to increase carrying capacity. It's so far covered in excess of 4000 faultless and enjoyable miles.
The reliable Bosch motor and its removable 625wh battery has been excellent (an additional 250wh battery can be attached to the frame's bottle cage bosses to increase range, albeit at ~£350). The Shimano gearing has suited me very well - I live in a mountainous area. The Shimano brakes are also excellent.
Whether it would suit your demands? But think it could be worth considering?

Sounds like a job for a German Trekking bike with a Bosch Performance drive. Mine, an Ortler, is on year 5 now and still going strong. Cube is a good make too.

Re: Best Ebike forTouring Musician with Trailer
I wonder about the amount of gear you’re proposing to lug around, 120kg sounds like a lot of stuff.
I was camped next to a touring musician a couple of weeks ago for an few nights, and he was using a Ridgeback Expedition, pure leg power, on which he’d been to the south of Spain and back. His kit looked heavy to me, but was probably no more than a lot of not-musician tourers use, and I’d guess might have had a pack-weight of c40kg. He was using a spacious, good-quality, two-person tent.
Here are our bikes, his on the left, not fully laden, mine on the right not laden at all at that point. When more loaded-up, he had an intriguing line in carrying stuff in boxes, strung to the bike with numerous bungee cords!

Re: Best Ebike forTouring Musician with Trailer
Thanks so much for all your replies and suggestions. I am now looking at the Cube Touring Hybrid Pro 625 (2025 Model), which I think will provide enough power and range in the batteries for my needs.
I'm hoping to use it with a Wide Path Camper, which would double-up as my sleeping space and outdoor music stage:

They weigh around 45kg, and I would be carrying probably another 50kg max including my music equipment, clothes etc. Hopefully this is do-able!!

One other thing to consider is the motor noise - from personal experience with Cube frames, the Bosch Gen 4 CX, 85Nm motor is noticeably louder and whinier than the almost whisper quiet Bosch PerformanceLine Gen 3, 75Nm motor.cyclingmusician wrote: 4 Aug 2025, 5:51pm Thanks so much for all your replies and suggestions. Of course this might not be a concern at all.

Re: Best Ebike forTouring Musician with Trailer
Thanks for the tip! I would definitely prefer a quieter motor...
Re: Best Ebike forTouring Musician with Trailer
A lot of weight to pull but it looks do-able. I'd check two things on the Cube bike: the ability to connect that fine trailer thing properly; a gear low enough to get up the long steeps dragging 100kg as well as you and the bike.cyclingmusician wrote: 4 Aug 2025, 5:51pm Thanks so much for all your replies and suggestions. That trailer looks the biz! If I was to go touring now I think t'would have to be with a-one o' them. Much better than a bivvy bag in a hedge-bottom.
