Fish and Chips

Shrinkflation!
"Even budget staples have not escaped the trend. Sainsbury’s Scottish Oats, previously sold in 1kg bags, are now offered in 500g packs at £2.10 — up from £1.25 for the larger size, representing a 236 per cent increase per 100g. Coffee lovers are also paying more for less. Nescafé Original Instant Coffee tins have been trimmed from 200g to 190g at Tesco, Morrisons and Asda."
Its everywhere!

4 pints milk has increased in price by over 6%. Outstripping state pension increase of 4.8% due to be paid next April. The inflation determining basket needs to be updated to cover the basics which people spend their money on.

TBF it's calculated on a 'basket' of c700 goods & services - and with the two overriders of 2.5%/average earnings growth, whichever of the 3 is highest, so I don't think there will be much, if any distortion.rjb wrote: 28 Oct 2025, 1:28pm 4 pints milk has increased in price by over 6%. Met Old Ken today who used to own the most successful Chippy in Taunton. Every week they used 90 stone of Cod and two tons of spuds.

You wanted it and have staunchly supported it ever since.
The pound hit new lows.
And that cost a net importer like the UK dear.
You said in 2016 it would strengthen again.
You were wrong.
Brexit is having serious and bad consequences now.
Re: Fish and Chips
Definitely a treat nowadays.
We had them twice in September at Westwood Ho! We had two pieces of fish and shared chips, plenty. That has much to do with my suppressed appetite rather than the cost, but it all helps.

Two wheels preferred.
Re: Fish and Chips
We have visitors this weekend. They live in a remote place so we will buy some fish and chips for them as a treat. As another treat we have a frozen veggy lasagne from 'Cook' who have a store in our town. After sampling a 'Cook' version on a visit to some pals I made a veggy lasagne but it was a long process and not quite as nice.
We see these tv ads for pre prepared frozen meals and things like 'Gousto' but really have no experience of them. I suppose they are a healthier alternative to takeaways?

I wonder, please, if you could actually put some supported figures on what’s causing inflation? Those left in the EU aren’t all doing well so there’s a mix of things going on out there.PDQ Mobile wrote: 29 Oct 2025, 7:27pmIn no small measure it's caused by Brexit.al_yrpal wrote: 28 Oct 2025, 7:26am Shrinkflation!

It’s my suspicion that costs have risen for multiple reasons. one of which would be profiteering and another would be the increased costs associated with labour (the activity not political party). I didn’t like the EU much either, but conclude that in leaving it we’ve jumped from the frying pan to the fire. Whatever, as with virtually all mistakes, we can’t unpick the past and can only work towards a better future.
The pound fluctuates against the euro. Under the last Tory Government it was circa 10% higher than it is now. I’d suggest that multiple factors are in play.

Using that reference source I see that in 2016 the pound was worth circa 1.4 euros, it’s now circa 1.15 euro and over the years has never recovered to the 2016 value.
Circa 2008 we were at the 1.5 level and then, over about a year, suffered a massive drop to lower than we have today. We were in the EU at that time, stuff is multi-factorial.

Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

Quantiative estimates of the effects of Leaving the EU on costs in the UK:

As always inflation isn't the same across different sectors and different regions, and for anyone interested in social effects it's essential to look at purchasing power as well as costs.

Re: Fish and Chips
It's complicated. There's both portion control and composition. And there's buying a single prepared meal and buying a complete controlled food intake. I'm especially interested in the effects on weight loss of the latter. We see these tv ads for pre prepared frozen meals and things like 'Gousto' but really have no experience of them. I suppose they are a healthier alternative to takeaways?
Prepared meals traditionally have high levels of salt and sugar. And now there's concern about the harmful effects of processing of ingredients.
If I knew a simple overview I'd cite it.

Thank you for the data, on the other hand I’d have much preferred it to have been supplied by PDQ Mobile.Jdsk wrote: 30 Oct 2025, 8:24am Quantiative estimates of the effects of Leaving the EU on costs in the UK:

Due to your influence (thank you) I try to support my statements with reference data, imho it’s constructive to do so and I’d encourage others to do the same too. That’s not to say that every post needs references, but they do add useful substantiation to many. Do I get everything right? I doubt it, but as posters we should (imho) endeavour to be factual - well that or clearly state what’s opinion, etc.

Re: Fish and Chips
Jonathan, if you are like me and eat very healthily cooking everything from scratch from basic ingredients, with plenty of varied veg, including seafood and vegetarian , avoiding ultra processed stuff and only about one takeaway per month I think you hardly need worry about pre prepared food.
We indulge on this sort of thing very little. Its a novelty to us. The worry is for those folk who gobble it all the time, rich or poor.

Re: Fish and Chips
Ready prepared fish and chips in a box is available from our village shop for £2.75. I tried it once, which was enough.
After our Scout meeting 65 years ago we would buy 'four pennorth wi scraps' which would be about two pee these days, but at least palatable.

It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

The links (Wiki etc) show clearly that the UK economy has suffered through Brexit.
And to my mind gained nothing whatsoever.
It has also opened the door to all sorts of unpleasant stuff too.
"Al" insisted at the time of the Referendum that the pound would soon recover and gain ground again.
He is proved totally wrong about that, and that was my main point.
That inflation is present in other nations is clear, but the UK is so import dependent that a weak currency has a direct affect on prices.
Not only, but not least, simply through oil.
.....
I just quick changed some pounds in Sainsbury's at Shrewsbury.
Not as favourable as online but handy for simplicity.
I got less Euros than ever before-
1:0667 to the pound.
Those wanting to travel to Switzerland would (on 29/10) have actually received less than one Swiss franc to a pound at the same place.
That is down from around 2.2 in 2008 and 1:80 at the time of the Referendum.
This is real time stuff, not fantasy land.

Re: Fish and Chips
Why do many of the threads on here end up in political rants that have little to do with the original topic heading?
For wonderful battered chips visit Anna's in Droitwich Spa on a Wednesday. They are marvellous. She also cooks her fish fresh for every customer, my favourite is her Haddock.

There is your way. There is my way. But there is no "the way".
