Price inflation is a political topic. Please read the opening post!

This IS the OP.
al_yrpal wrote: 28 Oct 2025, 7:26am Shrinkflation!

"Even budget staples have not escaped the trend. Sainsbury’s Scottish Oats, previously sold in 1kg bags, are now offered in 500g packs at £2.10 — up from £1.25 for the larger size, representing a 236 per cent increase per 100g. Coffee lovers are also paying more for less. Nescafé Original Instant Coffee tins have been trimmed from 200g to 190g at Tesco, Morrisons and Asda."

Its everywhere!

So the OP moved the discussion into places other than food himself.

Therefore I feel comment on "shrinkflation/ inflation" well justified.

That such increase is partly ( maybe more) caused by what he voted for seems not to to enter his head.
....
For what it's worth since fish and chips have been almost exclusively fried in palm oil, I find them less good and more indigestible.
And very very overpriced.
Hardly ever indulge.

Perhaps I am not a typical Brit.

It could be worse, politics are banned over on Cycle Chat, so if someone mentions the wrong thing a perfectly good thread suddenly gets shut down. Questioning the mods is banned too.

Because some people here have inflated views of their own importance and can not bear someone having a different view on the world to themselves :( . It’s a somewhat sad situation but not uncommon. On the other hand I find that most folk here aren’t particularly antagonistic or rude and simply want to get on with others whilst information and views are shared … as ever it’s just the few that spoil things for the majority. ‘Those few’ know who they are, after all they are very important people (in their own mind at least) .
Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

Cod has become more expensive due to a combination of factors, including overfishing, stricter fishing quotas, geopolitical supply chain disruptions (especially those involving Russian ports), and increased operational costs for businesses like fish and chip shops. Market dynamics, such as reduced supply and higher demand, also contribute to the price increase.

And, increased energy costs since the Russian pipelines were shut down. Chip shops use a lot of energy.

In France fish and chips generally costs about £17, a lot more than here, and the chips are nothing like chips here.

They're not banned, they're corralled into a restricted area for those who want to indulge, and IME the rules are pretty well observed. It's a good arrangement.

I'd have been proud of thinking up the title of this BBC article on the subject.

I tip my hygenic disposable Trilby to it's author.

The original topic, the price of fish & chips, is political, as the BBC article linked above demonstrates.

For the chip shop, I suspect it's lower demand that has the greater impact on prices, they need to cover the same fixed costs from a smaller sales volume.

Yes, but the problem arises when a long running non-political thread suddenly gets shut down just because someone said the wrong thing. (Such as the one about how to stay cool in hot weather.)

I've never noticed it myself, hence my reply. Does it happen often?

Good to hear - we got another 6kg delivery last week. Had some of their potted shrimps and gravlax too, which were very good (found their smoked haddock just a smidgin too salty for my taste, which surprised me)

Breakfast tomorrow is a pair of kippers from Port of Lancaster Smokehouse, which I buy in 6kg packs and freeze. Also very good value (and they happen to have a sale this weekend I noticed when I realised it was my last pair)
Just noting this supplier to link up with a post above.

Had a Tuna sandwich today for lunch, very nice it was too. I plan to revisit what’s available at Tesco’s in terms of canned fish; hadn’t considered mackerel before, but maybe I should give it a try.

I’m not so sure about smoked foods, wasn’t there some question of a carcinogenic link? Perhaps JDSK knows? (somebody please rattle his cage  ).

As for eating fish the NHS seems to think it a good idea:

Tuna itself can have Mercury levels that are high enough to be a concern if lots is eaten.
A toasted pitta filled with it and lots of mayo plus kalamata olives (seasoning to taste)is worth some risk though
