Dawes Galaxy Green
Dawes Galaxy Green
I have a 1992 Galaxy which I touched up a few years ago with a Humbrol green which I thought might be a decent match. Much too light although doesn't notice from a distance.
Does anyone know of a colour? I don't want a spray just a touch up paint I can apply by brush quite large areas.
Probably been covered before but don't fancy trawling through the posts.
Thanks.

Leopardskin is increasingly popular these days.

Re: Dawes Galaxy Green
Look at Humbrol No.3 Brunswick Green, and Precision Paints P10 Great Western Railway Licomotive Green (1928-1945).
I very much doubt that either it is exact, but they might be close enough for small areas.
There are oodles of greens in the Precision Paints range, and they come in usefully small-sized tinlets, but to avoid spending a lifetime you do need to know which historic bus and train companies painted things very dark green! Aldershot & District Motor Traction might be another one to look at - their green was very dark, ditto Southdown Dark Green.

Thanks Nearholmer, you must be from my area if you know about the "avershot and risk it" bus line, likewise Southdown. I'll check out Precision Paints.

Re: Dawes Galaxy Green
I grew-up in East Sussex (Maidstone & District green is pretty dark too), and my maternal grandparents lived in a place that was then still very rural between Woking and Sunningdale, and nobody in the family had a car, hence my love of bicycles, buses, and trains, all of which meant “going somewhere interesting”.
Re: Dawes Galaxy Green
There is a Vauxhall (I think) dark green that's pretty close. I'll check its name next time I go into the garage, I use it on my Dawes Edge 653 which is the same colour.
Re: Dawes Galaxy Green
I gave No 3 Brunswick Green a go and it is the same as I touched up before, will give Precision Paints a go.
Re: Dawes Galaxy Green
Try a car paint supplier. We went to one where the range was so extensive, several options would've sufficed. It's a lovely rich deep metallic dark green.
Re: Dawes Galaxy Green
After obtaining various greens I can inform those interested what it isn't :-
Humbrol No 3 Brunswick Green
Revell EMAIL COLOR (sic) No 62
RAL 6002 Leaf Green
All too light.
Thanks for replies.

Take the bike to a Homebase / Dulux Decorator Centre etc. They almost all have colour match facilities where they can scan existing paint and the computer will work out exactly what is needed and mix it up for you.
If you're interested you can take in pretty much anything that is the colour you want - bits of wallpaper, offcuts of carpet or fabric, painted tiles, bikes...
They just run a colour scanner over it. Clever stuff.

Re: Dawes Galaxy Green
That service is brilliant, I’ve had perfect matches from the same at B&Q, but I think the little scanning device they use will struggle given the lack of flat surfaces on a bike ……. It seems to need about 75mm square. No cost for asking them to try though!

I've just sent a paint sample to Smith & Allan paints - When I 'phoned them, they said the matching is done by eye. The reviews I've seen look promising. The paint I'm after is Tractol enamel and comes out at 16.50 + VAT for a litre. That's probably enough to paint a dozen bikes! I'll find out how accurate the colour match is when I receive the paint
Re: Dawes Galaxy Green
We have an excellent car paint place in our nearest small town. I was amazed at how many colours they offered that were close to/perfect match for our bikes.
But the B&Q matching thing sounds great. Presumably their paint is suitable for bikes?
