I heard him say it! I really did......

He is thinking of getting a REAL cycle! LOL.... never thought he would consider one, now he is.....

My nearest and dearest has an electric cycle, has had it for about 4 years, as he suddenly developed epilepsy and lost his driving licence for nearly 3 years before he was 'controlled'. He has a Tidal Force. An american cycle that he had had a lot of fun on, but most of all, for a long while it was his only legal way of getting about.

Anyway... We have both been trying to lose weight. Chas has done a lot better than me, he has dropped 3 stones and now is 15.7 stone. He looks great! he has promised to lose the beard when he gets to 15 stone, so Im encouraging him all the way!!

(he is a bit of a grizzly Adams right now  )

At lunchtime, he said he is considering getting a hybrid bike like the Sirrus, as he is spending more and more of his energy CYCLING and not relying on his back up power. He was rather impressed with the constant speed I can maintain and without his electric bit, his bike is MEGGA heavy. It has a battery on the front wheel, electric drive on the rear wheel, and for good measure another battery on the rack. Weight is 65kg!

Be nice to have him on a REAL cycle... I do get a bit tired spinning my peddles to impress him you know!

Isn't it great when you think your hobby has had an effect on those around you....?

In my case, I've been talking excitedly about the London Freewheel for months. A couple of weeks ago my eldest casually said she thought she'd come along too...and she NEVER cycles. She actually said she's looking forward to it!

good for you Mary - don't let him change his mind..

Good on you for persuading your other half to develop his taste in bikes!! Mine has threatened to get a Dutch machine like mine but I couldn't bear it at all if he got rid of his whiskers. Stubble is so prickly......

when i was cycling to work the other day i was passed by an electric bicycle. :x I couldn't believe it  i was doing 14-15 mph up this long drag when this guy cycled past me on what looked like a shopping bike, like i'd stopped. But there was something unatural about his pedalling style. He almost looked like one of those guys pedaling a derny on the track. His pedal revs were really slow and yet he just flew past me and looked like he wasn't trying that hard.

Anyway i caught him up at the next lights and yes it was definatly an electric assisted bike.So from that point for the next half mile till i turned off into another road i just sat on his wheel which he wasn't happy about.I thought well if he's having it easy with this electric stuff then i'm definatly sitting on and enjoy the benifit too

Electric bikes depend on the rider!

My Mother in Law is a lightweight 80 year old, and rides an American ElectriCriuzer - an old fashioned "Beach Cruiser" designed fo the US market.

As a result with her weight it scoots along at a fast rate!

This forum really has calmed down recently. Not so long ago, any mention of electric bikes provoked 5 pages of fury in the first twenty minutes. There was a lot of resentment at the suggestion that the CTC was encouraging their use, with counterblasts about disability issues.

This is obviously the key to a harmonious cohabitation. Electric bikes should be promoted by the CTC and their riders should receive instruction in the art of providing maximum protection for a following rider - eg riding with arms and legs as wide as possible, wearing baggy overalls stuffed to increase their profile, adjusting pace considerately according to the terrain. It would have to be carefully thought out. We would have to work towards emulating Tom Simpson's victory in Bordeaux - Paris (a defunct one day classic race where each rider had his own derny pacer) rather than Chris Hoy's success in the kierin. A dozen riders jockeying for position in heavy traffic might not be popular with other road users.

A lot still to think of but the idea is there and it might be a good way of encouraging more women out onto two wheels.

PS - A possible use for the speed indicating jacket? Dernier cri for the Derny rider 8)
