Beeline

Post by AndyB1 »

Hi
I am in Sri Lanka and using Beeline to navigate with a file from Komoot. This has worked well but for the last couple of days Beeline needs to be open on the phone to work. This means it is draining the battery fast as the screen is lit and if I take a photo or open another app it also switches off

I am also running Strava to record snd that sits in the background with no problems

Phone is an iphone 16e

Help appreciated, many thanks

Is it the latest version of the app?

What does the 'phone say about the condition of the battery?

Why does the screen have to be "lit"?

How about an external USB battery until this is sorted?

I navigate by iPhone, but click to black screen, with the app running in the background, as soon as I’ve “looked at the map”. I only leave the screen on if I’m in a really complex locality where I need to read the map continually. That way I get long battery life, although I also carry a “battery brick”. Between the two I can go several days without mains recharging.

PS: is it hot there at the moment? I find that the phone getting hot in direct sunlight is bad for battery life, just as excess cold is, so I stick it in my pocket on really hot days.

Thanks guys. Battery ok. Will check if app needs updating. Have battery bank so can continue

It did use to have to be on, and I think to start with it is ok if the screen is shutdown but then starts to not like it

Got stuck out last night and taken in by a local family…….

I'd check if there's been an update of the app. Sometimes new versions can have bugs.

Re the screen. Can you put it in lowest brightness. This doesn't solve the problem but it will use much less battery. If it's on auto brightness you may have to switch to manual (Android user here).

The way it now turns off if another app is accessed certainly sounds like a new bug. Can you report it? Maybe via app store or direct to developers.

The locals are certainly friendly. I imagine they enjoyed chatting and getting your every personal detail.

Well today it ran fine. I set it running and killed the screen and it kept running…..took some photos during the day and again OK. I don’t think I have altered anything so I will leave it be and do sn update / speak with Beeline when I get back to UK. I do like how it works, particularly in cities.

Two days of 5000ft climbs so tomorrow may be a rest day. At 6000ft and have found a guest house with hot water!

We haven't mentioned the importance of turning off every interface that isn't needed, nor all of the settings that reduce power consumption...

I have the phone set pretty efficiently but it is inevitable that if the screen is on then there is a high battery drain. The whole beauty of Beeline is avoiding that problem.

On an iPhone you can close apps as follows:

1. Swipe up from the bottom edge to halfway up the screen.

2. For each app window put your finger on it and „throw“ it upwards to quit it.

This closes only the foreground part of the app, not the background: the part responsible for notifications that checks in the background for new messages etc. There is a setting for each app that can reduce background activity. Reduced power mode does it for all at once and extends battery life noticeably.

The only way truly to restart an app is to restart the phone. This might help tame Beeline.
I am NOT a cyclist. I enjoy riding a bike for utility, commuting, fitness and touring on tout terrain Rohloff, Brompton M3L (2004) and Wester Ross 354 plus a Burley Travoy trailer.

Is it OK in the countryside too?

Hi Cowsham
Beeline works fine in the countryside, less junctions.

Cities are where I have found using a phone screen difficult due to the number of course changes there can be. Last year I remember RidewithGPS zig zagging me through an Indian city. With sun glare my phone was hard to read so I went to voice prompts but I kept missing turnings and having to wait for the next prompt.

Beeline for me works much better. It has a distance count down to the next junction and is easy to read whatever the light (it has a backlight you can switch).

I emailed with Beeline about the problem I was having and as suggested above they said to update the App (I had to reload the Beeline App from the App store and then my phone updated the Beeline device). I have had this Beeline about 3 years and have never updated the software, and before this tour in Sri Lanka I did not use it much. Very impressed with it now, good battery life and definitely water proof.

Well, I have to say that I'm quite impressed by all the technology.

If i was there, with my OS map, I'd be lost!

Happy Days.

The reality is that paper maps with any detail are difficult to get hold of for some countries. The best Sri Lankan map I could find is 1:420,000 (1 inch is 6 miles) and is dated 2018….and I had to import it from America, total cost around £15.
Nav Apps (komoot, strava, gmaps etc) are much more up to date and give an amazing degree of detail. Does not mean they are always 100% right but neither is a paper map.

I like maps but it is so much easier and safer using a Nav App. The issues are how you use the app, on a phone, beeline or garmin etc, and how you mount it.
