But i like it - correcting minor errors in other peoples post on a thread about jobsworths - its kind of meta!

and you're right: demonstrating it on this particular topic adds a level. : - )

I'm almost convinced that a driver purposefully tried to kill me once by doing similar to this. I was cycling along a busy but wide lane. As the traffic was heavy it was moving at a similar speed to myself so vehicles were passing me slowly. Not a problem - as a wide lane and they were giving me plenty of space. A large SUV type vehicle was slowly overtaking me as we approached a turnoff on the left. As it was alongside me, i was shielded from view of oncoming vehicles. Suddenly he slowed and flashed or gestured to an on coming vehicle indicating to take the the turn. I appeared from alongside the SUV to see the vehicle turning and we both slammed on our brakes to avert disaster. Probably a combination of automatic politeness and inattentiveness but perfect way to kill someone and get away with it if that was the intention.

Last week, a friend and I were given a FPN (£50) for "Cycling on a Footway".
The situation is this, it was an esplanade, not a soul was on it, we were doing walking pace and most importantly, the route by which we accessed the area had no signage indicating that such restrictions were in place. This has not rested well with me, the police were having a zero tolerance day due to problematic cycling/scooting in the nearby high street, this has morphed into fining the easy pickings on the nearby esplanade. 4 cyclists were stopped in the 10 mins or so I was with the police.
The signage issue is clear, there was one no cycling sign facing completely the wrong way, under a tree on the way to the esplande. I have videoed the route and been back since to check.
I think its most unfair and would ideally like to challenge it....I'm told the only option is in a magistrates court.... is this true...I've also read about informal challenges....any mileage in that?
Ive seen on google streetview that the sign was (6 years ago) facing the way it should have been. I have clear evidence that it was wrong on the day and still wrong now.
The esplanade is not adjacent to it part of a road....so there is no implied restriction. It relies entirely on signage.

Flashing headlights is legal, but officially it only means "I am here" (Highway Code Rules 110 and 111), so any driver acting foolishly and pulling out on the basis of being "flashed out", rather than checking for themselves, is driving carelessly and could be penalised.

I'm sure I can't be the only cyclist to have suffered an oncoming driver flashing and slowing to let a driver out across my path, putting me in danger needlessly and requiring emergency braking.
ah yes of course. that said i'm not sure that many drivers understand flashed headlights as giving that message though. seems to have become the signal to let another driver 'go.'

as to the letting another driver out across my path by a flash? happens most trips guv'nor! one of the main things to observe about oncoming vehicles. amongst many! maybe one day the standards of road craft will improve back to a prior general standard. pretty sure they have declined in the past few decades, or maybe i'm getting old.

Yeah but... that's not illegal. They can "advise" to wear one but can't do anything if you're not wearing one.

What I want to know is, what's the daftest thing you could do where you can get fined or even jailed for doing it.

I'm asking Chat GPT

EDIT:
A boy was hanged in 1629 for stealing a silver spoon. John Dean, aged about 14. :(

Stuff like that went on back then, so I told Chat GPT to put a cutoff date of 1980 on it...

Justin Lamb – Theft of meat & mobile phone (2023). Crime value: Mostly meat, low‑value items. Sentence: 5 months in prison.

Really, that's "harsh"? A lot of people would agree with it. The justice system seems to be working.

That's a bad one lol

"City of London Police this afternoon explained that Powlesland was stopped and ticketed by the same officer a month prior to that" - it sounds like Constable Savage from Not The 9 O'clock News

If the highway code regulations were like the collision regs, incidents like those described wouldn't happen.. In any situation there is a stand on vessel which MUST maintain it's course and speed when a give way vessel approaches.
