Brief return to the subject of clipless

I took note of everyones replies on the subject of clipless pedals.

Then I went on the internet to see what I could get from Evans and Wiggle plus others.

Out of all the types suggested, I think I shall go for clipless on both sides of the pedals.

my next question is that of choice.

I really liked the ones made by Crank Brothers. They were very attractive I particularly liked the Smarty pedals.

Anyone used these?

Oh, and the SPD pedals suggested, I couldnt find the exact model types suggested on here.

Did find workhard's suggestion of the M324, but they are only cleats on one side, I would like them on both. Couldnt find DavidT's suggestion of MD520.

But, going back to Crank Brothers (They come in lots of colours - hope Im not letting my xx down here ), would these fit a pair of cycling shoes with the SPD fittings?

Shoes on order, just waiting their arrival (Monday all being well).

I do have some time to research these and make my mind up, as they will be a Christmas pressie from him indoors.

Hi, I use Crank Brothers Mallets and find them very good. They have a big platform and so your foot is well supported so avoiding hotspots. The central eggbeaters are easy to clip into and have a lot of float but are still easy to unclip from. Once clipped in you are secure and can pull up really hard.
The only downside is the brass cleats which are not cheap. I'd expect them to need replacing in the next year.

If you can get to your local supermarket or newsagents and take a sneak look at cycling weekly, there is an article this week on inexpensive clipless pedal systems.

egg beaters are v good pedals. i used them for the two weeks it took me to get from les deux alps to santander, everything byegad says about them is true and i've heard a lot of good reports about them from all the lads i know who have them on their cyclo cross bikes.

mick, the thing about CB Mallets is that they are a wide platform pedal built around an eggbeater so you get the best of both worlds.

Manx Cat - the Crank Brothers pedals will match with SPD-type shoes.

I've got two sets of Crank Brothers pedals - Egg Beaters and Candys. The Candys look similar to the Smartys - double sided entry, similar shape.

I like the Candys - they're pretty easy to get into, and they're very comfortable for my creaky knees. I actually prefer the Egg Beaters (cos they look more minimalist), but the Candys/Smartys provide more support.

I'm running the M540 spd pedals in combination with the single mode release cleats with no complaints at all (that reminds me must tighten the cleat before ride home - dahm thing squeaks!). I looked at the XTR set and couldn't really fathom what i would have been paying for as they don't appear much lighter and other reviews couldn't really recommend the more expensive models over mine. If any one can explain the benefits of the more pricey ones (other than 30g!) I'm listening!

The following where the rough prices I found online.

PD M520 - £27
PD M540 - £36
XT M770 - £40
XTR M970 - £70

As mentioned, find something with a large enough platform to spread the pressure over the foot. Personally I like Time ATAC pedals - never had a pull out and plenty of "float", ie the ability to move about on the pedal. However, it's very much a personal thing and it's not fair to say one is better than another. Whatever you choose, take the time to set them up properly.

[my bold]

This is indeed very important - I found that I preferred the cleat to be slightly behind the ball of my foot, which is further back than some, and I was horribly uncomfortable until I established this.
