Best shoes for children to wear...

...when riding? Years ago (well about 12) I found at the York Rally a nice man selling NOS Sidi and other cycling shoes for young riders - 4 and 6 year olds. I am so sad I lost them as the Sidi's were particularly nice with leather soles and red mesh uppers (sniff, sob!). Has anyone seen or heard of anyone making cycle specific shoes or any recommendations for the best street shoes/trainers? I find that most aren't terribly toeclip friendly (you ever saw kid's shoes with SPDs?) when we (father and 5 year old son) are out on a tandem as the straps invariably foul the toe strap or clip. They also look hot and chunky.

I'll doubt you'll get shoes small enough to fit a 5 year old, but worth having a look in the bargain bin/sale goods or asking at your LBS, as they often have small sizes left over that they can't sell, so sell them off cheap.

My kids just wore trainers with toe clips until they were about 10, then we managed to find small sized shoes as above. I'd recommend a trainer with a flat sole (not ridged or studded) so that they slide in and out of the toeclips easily.
