We are planning to do the Touring Club of Italys cycle trip “From the Tyrrhenian to the Adriatic 540 km (from their book). We will be flying into Pisa and back from Bologna and am concerned about getting out of Pisa airport at 10.30pm which is when the flight is due in. This is the first long trip that we will be doing and also the first time we will be taking our own bikes. We hope to be able to get our 2 bikes and ourselves into a large taxi or 2 taxis. Are we likely to find taxis large enough at the airport? Does anyone know where we could prebook a large taxi. The bikes will be packed in bike bikes or polythene and we definitely do not want to have to start putting them together and cycling in an unfamiliar place in the dark.
We will be going in the second week in June and intend to stay in a combination of hotels/B&Bs. We also thought we may take a small tent as we are concerned that Tuscany and Umbria could be very busy at that time. We are quite fit 60 year olds but have only been cycling for about 6 years and would be pleased for any advice on this trip.

There are lots of people carrier taxis around Pisa so I would imagine some will be plying their trade at the airport. Bagged bikes would be easy for one of them.
Even cycling away from the airport is not a problem. Once the day tourists leave Pisa is like a cemetary, so cycling around is easy.

Thanks for the advice about taxis. Do you know of a reasonably priced B & B/hotel or campsite nearby. We would probably have to book a hotel as we will not arrive until 10 p.m.

Don't know about B&Bs except there a lots in Pisa. Do a google search.
I use the campsite about 800 metres from the leaning tower. www.camping.it/english/toscana/torrependente/
It is a good site with excellent facilities but expensive.

I flew in to Pisa at 10.30pm in May the other year. It's only one mile to the city from the airport. I had to walk it, as my tyre wouldn't inflate. The road is dead quiet. I'd booked a hotel over the phone the night before, telling them I'd only arrive about 11.30pm. No problem.
The night was balmy, and the streets in Pisa centre were full of people enjoying a stroll. Lots of cyclists, too, as Pisa's flat.
Don't be afraid to reassemble your bikes at the airport and whizz into town (you'd probably get away with not having lights, too!) Or, as the distance is so short, a taxi shouldn't cost much.
I always cycle in Italy in May, and have no problem getting in Youth Hostels and finding cheap hotels. Maybe June's not too bad, either, as July and August are the main holiday months.
Umbria's my favourite place - I really must write up my tours for HQ...
