I found this one, X-Tools Workshop Prep Stand, at CRC http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?PartnerID=79&ModelID=10231but they are out of stock right now. Can anyone recommend a stand/rack for about £20 that will store the bike and allow you to work on it and comes with the fixings and also folds away when not in use?

Looks like this (X-Tools) and costs £30 from CRC

I had one of these stands many years ago, and IMHO these are a complete waste of time as they do not hold the bike firm enough to do even the simplest of tasks. Plus the plastic cups mark the paint that sit under the bottom bracket on your frame.

You are better spending a bit more and having a more robust stand. I bought one of these from Argos a couple of years ago. It is exactly the same as ones sold by leading cycle stores but around £20 cheaper!

But don't clamp it as the picture shows!

Clamp it around the seat post, holds my MTB and road bikes, plus the kids bikes with no problems as all. And it folds away when not in use

Agreed on the £30 one in the first picture - absolute crap. I had one from Decathlon ... had to chuck it away. The bike sits on the BB with a sort of strap ... it just doesn't work.

I bought one from Rose Versand in Germany - excellent. They have an English language website) - ordering is fine, 2 or 3 days to delivery ... but a fixed charge of about E8 so you need to get an order together to make it worthwhile.

Rose also stocks a mini-stand that the rear stays sit on, with the back wheel just of the ground - great for either parking the bike, or gear adjustment (I keep one in my car for when I take the bike out on the rack - to use at my destination)

It does the job, but you can't beat a full size workstand, if you can, save up and buy something like this .

This one costs £89.99 at Argos. See AlanW's post above.

But it is now reduced from £89.99 to just £69.99 at CRC see here Seems like a good buy. Gets five star ratings from about 15 reviews.

Just ordered one from CRC, can't wait for VAT to go down on 1.12.08!

Be very careful about CRC's reviews, they are not what they seem, do a google for an independent review

I hear what you are saying UM. I have just googled but did not find anything explicit, just ratings, about 3 out of 5. I trust CRC reviews as I have written a couple myself, not always complimentary, and they have posted them up nevertheless.

£53.51 from Ribble
But not in stock.

They come with a variety of names on them, they're all the same Union stand. Here's a review;

I have had mine for about four years and have nothing but praise for it to be honest.

I seem to recall that I paid £69 for mine from Argos at the time, so Ribble's price is very good ideed.

If you mail them, once the item is back in stock you will get a automated return reply.

Yep - that's the idea ... bu the Rose one has a screw with a knob at the bottom so it folds easily - this link might work http://www.rose.de/output/importbilder/ ... 7013_1.jpg - and it's only E11!

The two side feet on the Minoura stand fold inwards, then the upright folds down too.

You can also adjust the height of the U shaped brackets depending on the bike.
