Might be worth having a read of the recent topic "Using Fenix torches as a bike light" for additional context.

I don't like Cateye, I've had a couple of their front lights and they were garbage, they now lie at the back of a draw somewhere :?

Take a look at Wiggle , they are doing some great deals on front lights.

Cateye do have a couple of decent rear lights, namely

Cateye TL LD610
Cateye TL LD1100

Big difference in price and probably in light output too between the two lights you are thinking about, so hard to compare them directly.
How about a B&M Ixon IQ, I recently got one and I am very impressed, cheaper than the Hope if you get it from Germany at Bike24.net :

Excellent shaped beam putting the light where you most need it. Have a look at this video on youtube comparing the EL500 with the Ixon IQ :

before i got my exposure enduro i was thinking of going for the hope 1, looks very well made, probably quite rugged. i still fancy buying one as a helmet light so let me know how you get on with it if you do get the hope 1.
