Because of the insurance and the legal help (though I'm also a member of TriathlonScotland which double covers me to some extent), the magazine and the information service which I have used occasionally for foreign tours in that order of importance. I've never ridden with CTC groups except in the context of the triennial 100 mile rides; while I found the company pleasant enough, I'm not sure I'd want it regularly, and if the people whose letters are printed in the mag are representative, that tends to reinforce that prejudice.

Of course one could say the same about the readers' letters in any magazine (just look at the Comic).

I am a member for many reasons, a lot of which have already been mentioned.

However, one of the main ones is the campaign work that the CTC do. I get a lot out of cycling and feel that by supporting the CTC I can give a little back.

The campaigns work is done on both a local and national level. On a local level I can see proof of the good that the CTC has done - tangible changes have been made for the better.

On a national level the work that the CTC does is a little more controversial. Some people have criticised some elements of it, and have given a reasonable account of their miss-givings; while others seem to have just complained about the CTC for the sake of it - totally missing the point that if the CTC wasn't doing this campaign work then who would: definitely not those who just look for excuses to knock. Despite some wise words from the former group (which I hope that the CTC takes on board) I believe that overall the CTC does make a difference for cyclists such as my self on a national level too.

For this campaigning work alone I am happy to part with a small amount of my wedge.

Good point, it is a bit unreasonable to expect perfection, especially with members with all sorts of cycling interests, and conflicting road user needs. What they do achieve is certainly a lot better than doing nothing.
