Wheel Size ???

Post by Mike777 »

Hi all

I have a 26" wheel which size is 19-559 / 537 ERD on it.

My question is what width tyre will this except.

Will it take a 1.75 X 26 tyre OK ????

Many thanks

I do and have done exactly that for years.

I think 47mm (1.75") may be the largest you are recommended to fit to a 19mm rim like yours is.

559 is the most common 26" rim size
No idea what the 537 means.

The tyre hopefully will say 47-559 on it somewhere.

I am using the same rimsize and the older version of the same tyre. They really should not be difficult to fit. I do not use levers to put them on the rim.

Make the effort to push the bit of tyre that you start with, right down deep into the bottom of the rim.

As you feed the rest of the tyre on the rim keep making sure that the tyre is NOT central to the rim but that it is so that the bit of tyre you started with is at the bottom of the rim's well and closer to the hub. Then you will find the bit of the tyre you are finishing with will be much more slack as it is pushed further from the hub.

Many thanks for this advice I slightly confused (which does not take much :D ) Can you confirm this section.........as you feed the rest of the tyre on the rim keep making sure that the tyre is NOT central to the rim .

Sorry if I have missed the point and many thanks for your time

The idea is that you gain a bit of slack to fit a tyre by ensuring that the bead opposite where you are working is well down in the bed of the rim. This is not always as easy as it might be with modern rim profiles.(I think what Meic was saying is that if you imagine two circles - the rim and the tyre bead, the tyre bead should not be centred on the hub but away from the hub by the amount you can get it down into the rim bed.)

Some people find the Var tyre lever helpful

ERD - Effective Rim Diameter - used when calculating spoke lengths.
