I should have said that it's smaller than the new Berlingo - which is a good foot longer than the old one. The Roomster is about the length of a VW Golf but because of the way they've pushed the wheels out to the corners it has a lot of internal space.
It's an ugly, but functional car. But then my favourite car of all time (Citroen BX) would not have won any prizes for looks.
I know I probably shouldn't mention his name on this forum, but Jeremy Clarkson raves about the old Berlingo. Sales trebled in the UK after he reviewed it (about 4-5 years ago).
The Caddy Maxi Life is even longer than the new Berlingo, but the third row of seats do not fold into the floor - they have to be removed altogether, which is a bit of a drag.

I've recently acquired a Peugot 307SW (06 plate). It is great for transporting bikes. When we went to Spain in the summer, we drove to my sister's in Plymouth and cycled onto the ferry from there. The rear seats remove (individually) in seconds, so we took two out, stood our two bikes side by side where the seats were (this car has enough height for our bikes to stand, unlike the Focus), leaving the remaining seat for our lad, and loads of boot space for trailer, panniers, child seat, etc. I always take the front wheel off, but you can get a bike in without doing so. Note that the rear seats also fold down and forward, still leaving enough space for a bike, should you wish to leave them in the car. I average just over 50mpg (diesel).

Thanks for all the input. I very nearly got a Ford Mondeo estate, but in the end decided on the Ford Focus Estate. Dragged my dad over to check it was mechanically sound etc, and am picking it up on Friday.

I use a Skoda Felicia Estate, reasonably economical. I paid £1000 under the list price (secondhand) from a Bmw/Rangerover agent. I can get two bikes in (and often do) I think it would be possible to get three in if carefully packed. I do remove the front wheel and the saddle pin, saddle and bag.
Two of our members went to inspect a Sustrans route yesterday, and I picked them up to take them to lunch with another member. The Sustrans route (Cambridge to Huntingdon) has been messed up when a new by-pass was put in at Longstanton. Site meeting with the County Council arranged for this morning, to find a way over the problem..

The Ford Focus estate is super dooper - bike fits in the back with ease and it's lovely to drive (well compared to the Corsa I suppose most things are!). The dog is quite taken with it as well
