17 miles each way for me M-F.

Though for the past 3 weeks I've taken the car - With temperatures as low as minus 15 in Aviemore, it's not been above freezing here for a while now. Today being the exception - So it was back on the bike :D

And....I am that Lycra clad cyclist that try's to hammer it past everyone, but takes a breather when I am out of sight

Dave.

25 mile round trip if I can take a shortcut through farm tracks, 32 miles if it's too muddy for that.
3 to 5 days a week (sometimes work from home or have to travel further afield)
Last winter was my first and I carried on almost right through apart from maybe 5 really wet windy days.
This winter I'm being a bit more cautious - I use a lot of untreated roads and I've hear of a lot of spills.
Looks like no ice tomorrow though!

Well I've applied for a new job, & if I am sucsessful I'll be comuting 48 miles per day 5 days a week.

I've already cycled it a couple of times for interviews, still trying to work out the best route,
one that misses out the major hills etc..

currently 3 days a week (tue-thu, using the train on mon and fri to bring clothes etc)

i expect to do this all year round, and had done so up to christmas ok. i've not cycled this year yet (went back to work on monday) as i am being a girlysaurus about the cold.

I'm jealous of people with big cycle commutes. I commute twenty paces to my PC. But then I give myself a long lunch break to cycle 20-30 miles (depending on the season) to back where I started from.

God I am very impressed so I think I should be able to cope with 12 miles each way.

What sort of time when I have done it I do it the trip in around 45 mins but then I am on tourer and have a pannier on board.

And one major road to cross which can be very quick or a 5 minute wait.

I am planning to start on Monday 3 days a week then upto 5 days a week by the end of Jan fingers crossed the only days I wont ride is if its really icy.

Mine is 17 miles each way and I do it every day, except this week and the week before Xmas when it was very icy, we opted to wimp out.

It's a bit far, really, and stops me from chasing things. If I could have my way I'd do a 12 mile commute instead, then I could ride faster without being tired the next day! :P

Now I love a good day ride.

I like putting in a minimum 50 miles for pleasure.

But 48 miles for a commute?

You're a better man than me. I found that a 30 mile round trip commute (from where I live in Great Barr to Merry Hill) was about my limit for work.

You have my respect!

Good luck!

I agree with you gazza! I'm interested in these tales of long commutes as I may end up moving further from work. I currently have a 5 mile each way route which becomes 10 miles on fine days. For me the problem would be the time that a longer commute requires. I'd be prepared to do 45-60 mins each way but that would limit me to about 15 miles (at my level of fitness in a relatively hilly area). Does anyone spend longer than an hour each way?

48 miles! Respect!

My 34 per day was easy when I felt well, but climbing up the hills on the way home after a hard day at work was a bit difficult. I was glad of the excuse to have to take stuff in so I could use the car! I rode 5 days a week on a few occasions, but we finished early on a Friday, so I liked to take the car and make a quick getaway. On other days, the weather was too bad.

It used to take me 45 minutes to get in, and about a hour to get home, but I suppose 24 miles instead of 17 isn't much further - but thinking about it - it is!

42 miles round trip over south downs, any where between 1hr 10 and 1hr 20 each way depending on conditions,do this 3 times a week ,sometimes 4 in summer. There are times Ihate it but these are outwieghted by the good times, get into a habit and it becomes easier[after the first year or so!]

It's only recently that my circumstances have allowed me to start commuting to work on the bike. Moving to a new office at the end of this year with full showering & changing facilities, which will mean I'll have the option of a 40 mile round trip! Otherwise - no shower, no cycle.

Well, I've heard today I have the job & will be starting 19th Jan. :D

I'll try & keep to my idea of riding every day, but the good thing is
the train staion is 2 mins from house & at work is 2 mins away as well, so if needed
I can always get train one way if I'm feeling lazy one day !!

As for the time it takes, the last time I cycled it took me 1 hour 35 mins.
