Thank Chris, but I'll stick with my Mk1. Thanks for offering, perhaps you could join us?

The 5sp Chopper still hasn't enough of a wide ratio spread than the SA AW. I plan to have the AW and 3 sprockets - that'll get me up the hills and allow me to cruise, but thanks for the offer.

No thanks down the shops and back is far enough on a Chopper.I do need some advice though.
Doing the LEJOG in May ,cant decide on one section .
We are staying at yha and syha, booked in at once brewed (Hadrians wall)on the 6th night. Then on to Wanlockhead via Annan, either B7020 or A75 to Dumfries then A76 and B797.Any advice on traffic situation on the A road ?

Good 'ole Choppers eh?
Shopper Choppers?

No advice on your route other than to take the A7 for Edinburgh, then over the Forth and through Fife to Perth.

Follow the Old A9 all the way to Inverness.

Easier, nicer, quicker, quieter.

Mick, good luck to you.
I hope you manage to get the chopper complete in time.
Epic.
My wife wants to know if you will complete the experiance with period clothing?
Green snorkal parka, flared jeans big collars and a tank top????

A Tank Top has been threatened on more than one occasion, but Flares will need bicycle-clips!

Had a chat with my engineering mate earlier this evening. Three cogs on a SA hub is going to take some machining/designing. Much scratching of heads, and he's gone away to cogitate.

He's coming round for "tea" next week, and he and I are going to get to grips with drop-out widths, sprocket ratios and clearances down in the workshop!

2 cogs on an AW is easy, take out the spacer & fit them back to back with the dished centres touching, then refit the circlip  It needs an old pre-index rear mech which can either take a 1/8" chain or be shimmed out to do it. I used an old Huret Allvit. A double chainset is handy, you can run it as 2 separate gearboxes, inner to inner and outer to outer. 3 cogs I think you'll struggle.

Yes, thanks PW. Been there, seen it, got the tee shirt. Me and my mate did that in the mid 60's. Trouble is, I want a wider system - 16t 22t 28t.

I think I had a 16t 22t or so in those days.

If all else fails, it's back to two SA cogs, or even not bothering at all!

Just seen the pictures of your bike Mick.
Have you riden a chopper ?
I imagine it will be hell ( and back ) to do LEJOG
Still, it will be an achievment.
If you dont get the bike ready in time you could always use a space hopper!

Yeah, great. Rubbish really. I rode it a mile or so.

My LEJOG idea is just that - an idea. If I can "modify" it a bit, I'll go for a long ride - 20 odd miles - and see how I feel.

If I can do E2E, I may be the first person ever to have done it.
An achievement, as you say!

I think you would be pretty safe in removing the word 'may' and inserting the word 'will'. :-D

Why not the direct route. The B7076 from Gretna to Lockerbie to Elvanhead and the cutoff for Wanlockhead. This route has very little traffic. All the through traffic is on the M74. It has good surfaces and is mostly not so close to the motorway that traffic noise is noticeable

Or if you are wanting to use the B7020 then use the B7076 to Ecclefechan and the B725 to get to the B7020.

It's a shame to skip Lockerbie though as there is a good choice of bakeries and cafes and pubs for a lunch stop.

there was a note from ctc that wanlockhead was no longer taking one night stands - or should i say overnight lies? :)
we are going over arran and the west coast, and will deal with the great glen as best we can when we get there - might even go on the dust road on north side for some of it if things look too bad there; elsewhere will be fine IMHE
dep LE 19may09 for 11 days @ 60-90 mpd
does the crask inn bunkhouse have duvets/blankets or is a sleeping bag required?
