The Bovril at the back of the cupboard

I haven't been well the last couple of days and its cold outside (particularly after waving Mrs.Wildduck off to work in that cold easterly wind...).

So I want a hot drink. Think to myself, "Can't have anymore tea otherwise I'll be peeing for the rest of the day". So in a flash of inspiration, Bovril comes to mind.

Rummaging through the back of the cupboard I eventually find the jar. Can I get the top off? Can I b****r!!!!!!!!! So after some bathing the lid in boiling water, I get in.

When I make it though it tastes terrible. I check the the best before.....

Why do I bother!

I made some blancmange the other day I found at the back of the cupboard that was dated 1992 - it was fine.

Never bothered with dates, if it looks ok, the container isn't trying to go spherical and any mold can be cut or scraped off then it's probably edible.

I never get ill either - so it must do me some good...

When I stopped smoking I couldn't stand the thought of milk in my mouth for some reason. That meant no tea, and I only drink coffee if I am ill... I spent maybe 6 months drinking Bovril, and now everybody I know has half a box of Bovril cubes at the back of their cupboard now :D

I still drink it at the workshop since it's easier than remembering to get tea/milk/sugar all the time, but I have managed to get over my milk revulsion and am now back on as many teas a day as I can get other people to make 8)

Our cat Albert is partial to Marmite! We have to keep the jar in the cupboard, or he insists in 'cleaning' it for us. Uggg.

Love marmite though I do.... Bovril, well, not sure of beef tea, it was one of those things force fed to us as children when we were ill, like the smell of bleachy floor water and dettol (used to mop up sick) .... I hate the smell of Bovril now sadly. Too much association with being ill.

Bovril was a 'hiking drink' for us when younger. Thermos full of Bovril. (sometimes full of broken glass too). The last time I was there, the cafe at the end of Llyn Ogwen sold mugs of bovril. Awesome for when you come off the mountain after a long day! I've tried making a drink with marmite, vegemite, and the NZ version of marmite/ Only the NZ version comes close to Bovril in taste. Marmite and vegemite make a fairly...interesting drink.
