Ice Cream Van/idea

Post by legitlee »

I was cycling home last night and an Ice cream van overtook me at the same time started his music which made me jump out of my skin and caused a wobble, then the idiot cut me up and pulled in to park at his normal spot in front of me causing me to swerve out, thank goodness there was nothing coming the other way. In Germany the Ice cream van would have allowed me to continue first diffrent culture and Law coupled with heavy fines I know i was stationed out there for years.
Why can't there be a solid white line 1m from the curb (1m will even allow a cyclist to miss drains etc) on ALL roads for bikes, to be kept clear at all times (no vehicles at all) even if the road is not very wide, that way in order for a vehicle to pass it will have to slow down wait untill its safe to overtake then pass. that way I wont get clipped or blown. I guess i'm asking to much. Thank you for allowing me to have my rant, feel much better now.

Whilst one would like a dedicated cycle network that mirrored the road system, I can't really see such a thing being executed in the way described if only for the fact that so many people wouldn't have anywhere to park cars: think of the environmental havoc from all those nice front gardens sddenly being tarmacced over. Not to mention the fact that the vehicle free rule would stop people getting between their homes and the road, both drivers and cyclists (as cycles are afterall vehicles). Methinx that a simple blanket ban on motorised vehicles in general would be less hassle to enact!

No worries, we all feel like that some times. (welcome to the forum BTW)

You mean like this!

This is a very very bad idea.
this would give motorists the message that everything to the right of the line is for them, and to expect cyclists to keep in the gutter. Paint such lines and they will overtake faster, closer and with less care.

As if cycle lanes were not thin enough as it is.

I like that, a solid white line that with suitable markings that will keep bicycles away from the kerb.
Not only that but it should help stop drivers becoming irate thinking you're holding them up - no much one can do if you can't move over...

What's wrong with it though, is the leading edge shouldn't be broken - otherwise it encourages you to think that you can move into it and the bicycle should be further up the road from the leading edge and more central in the lane.

The trouble is that drivers think that it IS a cycle lane and expect you to move to the left of it. Now, if they painted cycle symbols to the right then that would be a different matter.

 Rather like the sprinters' stayers' and pusuiters' lines on the track we could have a roadmen's line on the road - say one metre out - keep to the right of the line for the primary position. The obvious colour would be yellow in keeping with the jersey. Could even be double ....
