Jaffa Cakes

Post by emergency_pants »

Our company has just carried out an unofficial Jaffa Cake tasting session.

Tesco Value Jaffa cakes vs Tesco standard issue Jaffa cakes.

I can hereby notify you all that there is a negligible difference between the two.

Our test test conclusion was that they both taste the same and they cannot be differentiated easily. One person thought the standard issue cake was slightly sweeter and one other thought the Value cake was slightly drier and crispier around the edges.

Everyone concluded that if the two boxes were mixed up, no one would be able to distinguish between them by taste alone.

Visually, the Value cake has a whiter internal sponge base. Apart form that, they both appear identical, including the quality of chocolate on the top, the random swirly pattern, circumference and even the delicious Jaffa orangey bit was identical in both cakes.

Close comparison of ingredients on the side of the boxes show exactly the same ingredients, in the same order on the ingredients list.

Only a single difference was noted: The standard Jaffa has 1% more chocolate than the Value one.

Weights were not taken but please note that eating too many Value Jaffa cakes will make you just as porky as eating too many standard issue cakes. Nutritional values were identical, apart from the higher sugar content (probably from the 1% extra chocolate on the standard Jaffa cake).

The Value Jaffa box contains 24 jaffa cakes.

The standard Jaffa box contains 36 cakes.

The standard box is twice the price of the Value box.

Please also note that eating too many Jaffa cakes can make you feel slightly queasy.

Thank you.

I don't believe in Jaffa cakes. They're a red herring to make people think ther's life after dinner.

A most cogent and lucid description of your findings.
In the interests of scientific accuracy, I shall repeat your experiment at teatime.

Oh... now you've gone and done it... There will have to be another experiment.

Chris... maybe you could include McVities in your experiment?

Talking of non-original Jaffa cakes... we get Cherry ones here (I *love* cherries), Strawberry ones too. However, we can also get Mint ones, and sorry but that's just plain *wrong*

I've heard tell that there are 12 teaspoons of sugar in EACH jaffa cake, so 2 boxes probably equals at least a bag of sugar!

Quick kitchen experiment. One tea spoon of sugar weighs around 6g, one jaffa cake weighs 12g (according 't web).

So even if they're pure sugar that's only 2 tea spoons full. Good news!

Quick google around says they're 50% sugar (as you say) - 48 calories per cake, so 2 packs = almost half your required daily calorie intake!

Hmmm, choices.

Four packs, or two each fig rolls and jaffa's, but then there's jammie dodgers. Three of my faves, but which one deserves to be double packed?

Rotation, that's the answer
2 x jafs + 1 each other day 1. 2 x jd day 2, 2 x fr day 3 - repeat.

I recall, many years ago, Les Dawson saying that as a child, his parents were too poor to afford talcum powder and they used to dust him with flour - he would often break out in jaffa cakes

Personally, like other posters, I much prefer fig rolls :P Thankfully, my parents could afford talc, so I have no such bad memories
It's also possible to eat two packets of FR's without feeling any queasiness

Very interesting. This is just the sort of information that we should be having on these boards.

Thank you Emgy Pants.

I love Jaffa Cakes, both real and pretend.

I once carried a similar experiment with Weetabix. Unfortunately the value version of those little devils was decidely below par. I think the box they came in would have tasted better.
