Saddle setback

Post by ANTONISH »

I have a 1980's 50cm Italian road bike. My problem is that it was probably designed for the American market and has a very steep seat tube angle-about 76 degrees ( avoids front wheel toe overlap and susequent litigation).I like the bike and would like to use it more.
Because of the seat angle I can't get sufficient saddle setback, I would like to increase this by about 2cm. At the moment the seatpin is a pretty standard setback Dura-ace.

Possibly the seat tube is steep to get you up over the cranks and maximise power - AFAIK this is the main reason for steep angles on racing bikes, rather than toe overlap (anyone who can get toe overlap at the speeds of a race is doing something special!)

I wonder if you could find a longer saddle, that would allow you to move it back more (because of the longer rails)?

someone, profile, used to make a fast back seatpost (in addition to the fast forward version) that allowed, i think, 5cms of travel. the only other i can find is the Thomson Elite Set-Back Seatpost giving 20mm of rearward travel. see http://www.ctcshop.org.uk/cycling/p/CTC ... 300005865/

What do you find is the problem?

Is it that you want to be further back, behind the BB?
or just not enough reach?
The seatpins linked above could be combined with a longer 'bar stem too.

If you get an iBeam seatpost and saddle then you can slide the seat forwards and backwards quite a bit, much more than you can with a railed saddle.

Obviously it's not an ideal solution as you need new saddle and post and if you like classic saddles they won't be available as an iBeam version.

Thanks for all that, a 20mm setback is just what I need. It is to get behind the BB by the same amount as my other bikes (as we all know the saddle position is the reference for all the rest, so if I can get that right I can alter the rest to suit)
