V-brake levers for profile handlebars?
V-brake levers for profile handlebars?
I fancy trying profile handlebars on my next bike build, but I also want to use some existing MTB disc brakes.
Anyone know if reversed levers (look like these, for example) are available that pull the extra cable needed for V / MTB disc brakes? (I know I could use standard MTB levers, but IMHO the cables going forwards would look a bit of a mess. I don't think Travel Agents are the answer either, due to their 90 degree bend at the brake end. But I appreciate that using BB7 Road discs would solve the problem; just don't want to spend the cash!)

Such lever has a very short pull.
Not safe with disc brakes IMO

I'm going to stick my neck out here, and say go on, fill yer boots. (gets ready to duck
)
You will have to set the disc up so the pads run dead level, and the rotors will have to be absolutely straight, but you'll be able to do it.
I had a bike with such a setup once.

Re: V-brake levers for profile handlebars?
some (but not all) cable dics have a rep for dragging badly, so if you do set up the pads very close to the disc they might not last long.
You could go for something like the tecktro drop bar V brake levers on the end of the bar - this is what I did with my Profile bar and it worked fine (although mine were normal aero levers mated to CP brakes but the fitting is the same).
BTW, wanna buy a profile bar - I've a spare tht I don't want as I didn't get on with the position?

Hmmm, interesting: sounds like a planSi wrote:You could go for something like the tecktro drop bar V brake levers on the end of the bar - this is what I did with my Profile bar and it worked fine (although mine were normal aero levers mated to CP brakes but the fitting is the same).
Maybe - will send PM.Si wrote:BTW, wanna buy a profile bar - I've a spare tht I don't want as I didn't get on with the position?

Levers for drops seem to assume that the bars curve away from the lever - they sort of do on profile bars, of course - guess it depends on the detail (as always!).
yep, they were fine, I put them just to the front of the curve at the front end of the bar so that the lever pulled back to the bit where the curve is, thus giving more room. Not as neat looking as the levers that you originally asked about but they work.
Re: V-brake levers for profile handlebars?
I will contradict Si and advise against it. I have this set up on my folder with mini Vees and due to the curve of the Tektro lever the cable pull is insufficient to allow the brake to be set up without rub. If I did it again I would use Dia Comp 287(?) levers as the shape is straighter.

Re: V-brake levers for profile handlebars?
Fair enough - as mentioned, I used bog standard aeros rather than tektros: shimano ultegra/600 infact, so if the 287v levers are the same shape they ought to work OK.

Thanks Russell - really useful linkRussell wrote:I will contradict Si an advise against it. I have this set up on my folder with mini Vees and due to the curve of the Tektro lever the cable pull is insufficient to allow the brake to be set up without rub.

If it helps, I was using Deore mechanical discs, and 165mm rotors.

I believe there are disk brakes out there that are set to work with road brake pull. So that may be the way forward.
If I had a baby elephant, I would put it on a recumbent trike so that it would become invisible.

Re: V-brake levers for profile handlebars?
I ran V-brakes with standard road levers. They worked really, really well but rubbed on every climb due to the minimal pad-rim clearance, so I'd say no.
