Wild camping on the smaller Greek Islands

Post by Islandhopper »

I am going Island Hopping this July to some of the smaller greek Islands.

I have my Rogh Gude, and a list of camp sites. I Wonderd wether any of you have camped wild on the islands and if so where? and how did you get on?
Also because i have plenty of time, can you recomend some of your favorite places?

Thanks
Mark.

Ps i'm 51 and probabley going through a mid life crises.... tell you what though...Its great!

Might want to be flexible in your plan a bit and take things as they come than just strictly wild camp.all the time.simplycos you are going to fry .Also the access to some islands is via steep stepped paths which even donkeys struggle up(eg.some of the islands near Santorini). It wont always be easy..Camp sites are in abundance some with swimming pools. Guest house owners as swamp the ferries when you arrive on some islands.Theres plenty of easy islands but they tend not as interesting (e.gParos & Anti Paros)as the tougher ones like Ios and Santorini..The few I went to were a total mixed bag..but totally enjoyable...

In theory (as you probably know...) wild camping's illegal in Greece, but in practice you're only likely to get in trouble if you try sleeping on the beach in a fairly touristy place. I've never camped in the islands, but elsewhere in Greece I've had no problems (and many very good experiences): if you're not sure, the best thing to do is usually to ask in the local cafe or shop (often the same place in smaller villages anyway) and ask if there's a good place to pitch a tent. (The churchyard or schoolground are often offered as suggestions.) If the locals know who you are (and if you've bought an icecream or beer or two from them...) then they're unlikely to get upset -- and quite likely, in fact, to keep an eye out for you and your stuff.

If you're away from habitation, any quiet spot will usually be fine -- but watch out for sheepdogs if you're up in the hills (they tend to be left alone to guard the sheep, are bred to fight off wolves, and generally seem to regard campers as a variety of wolf...). This might not be a problem in the smaller islands, though!

Thanks for the tips all realy good. I'm keeping it flexable...I will probably go to the named camp sites, and mix it with some wild camping and a night or two in a apartment, B&B etc.
I'm realy looking forward to it now, my son is goin to meet up with me on the second week,
My new bike is great apart from the sadle. I will be fitting it with a new Brooks B17 tomorrow, and will need to break it in befour I set of in a month.

Thanks for the feedback.
